Support appreciated for annual walk To the editor: On Saturday Feb. 4, 2023, 35 people met in Derry Township Community Park to make their way around the one mile trail to raise money for the 13th annual Walk for Warmth. The event was held now, when temperatures are low, so that walkers could imagine what families who are struggling might endure. Sponsor forms turned in that day equal a total of $6,663.37. Mandates make jobs less appealing On Feb. 2, the Sentinel published an editorial praising Governor Shapiro for removing the appearance that a degree was necessary to fill the hundreds of vacant jobs in state government. I think more than a symbolic gesture will be needed to accomplish that goal. When I was a military spouse for years, I would apply for Federal, state and local jobs wherever we were stationed. To the editor: Let’s just suppose that I wake up some morning and I decide I no longer want to live here in Lewistown. I know that someone over in the next town has a nicer house with a nicer yard and a swimming pool. I climb over his fence, or I cut a hole in it, and I walk right up to his door and demand that he let me in. I also tell him that because of inflation I can no longer earn as well as I would like living in Lewistown. The end of an era for the nursing Class of ’42 To the editor: The death of Edythe Stephens in November closed out the Class of 1942 for the Lewistown Hospital School of Nursing. The last four members of the class made it to the ages of 98 through 101. Marcella Albright Harner, of State College, died in 2019 at the age of 98. Margie Folk Goss, of Burnham, passed away in 2020 at 99. Evelyn Houser Wilde, of Belleville, was 100 and died in 2021. Edythe Sheaffer Stephens, of Burnham, was 101.
