PORT ROYAL — Kody Lehman scored a win for the little guys in the sprint car feature Saturday night at Port Royal Speedway.

Lehman, of Enola, earned $5,000 for his first career win at the speedway. He has one of the smaller, low-budget teams in the pit area. He had a very fast racecar and some good racing luck on his side as he narrowly missed a first-turn crash.

“This is a long time coming,” Lehman said. “I thought this was never going to happen. I’m just speechless right now.

“It means the world to us; we’re a low-budget team,” Lehman added. “We do what we can when we can and try to show up every week. I’m glad we got this win off our back. There’s a lot of great people behind me.”

Tyler Walton started on the pole and raced into the lead off turn two ahead of Lucas Wolfe, Michael Walter II and Lehman.

Point leader Devon Borden started ninth, but raced by Jeff Halligan and Blane Heimbach off the top of turn two and quickly into fifth.

Walton tried to duck under a slower car entering turn one, but spun across the track and hit the outside fence. Wolfe had nowhere to go and slammed into the side of Walton’s car and flipped. They were OK.

Lehman spun to miss the wreck and his car went backwards between the fence and Walton’s car. Halligan and Borden managed to squeeze between the two crashed cars. Walter inherited the lead with 18 laps to go. Lehman was allowed to restart second because he wasn’t involved.

Borden tried to take second, but he slid out of the groove in the second turn. Lehman, Halligan and Heimbach got by him.

Walter shredded a left rear tire and stopped with 14 laps to go.

Lehman inherited the lead while Borden pitted to change a right rear tire.

Halligan blasted under Lehman in the first turn. He couldn’t clear the pass as Lehman carried too much speed off the top groove.

Heimbach and 14th starter Steve Buckwalter raced hard for third.

Lehman caught the tail of the field and began lapping cars. Halligan’s race ended abruptly as he flipped over the third turn fence with three laps to go after a tire blew. He was checked-out and eventually walked back to his trailer on his own.

Lehman led Heimbach for the restart with 17th starter Logan Wagner third in his first night in the Kreitz Racing 69K. Heimbach tried to take the lead with a first turn slider, but Lehman was too good on the cushion.

“I knew he wasn’t going to follow me around the top,” Lehman said. “I knew he was going to try and slide me. I figured if I got to the center before him, and got off, it was probably game over from there.”

He pulled away from the field over the final two laps winning by 2-seconds. Wagner won the battle for second with Heimbach, 20th starter TJ Stutts and Borden completing the top five. Buckwalter finished sixth and Mike Wagner seventh. Lance Dewease, in his first night at the speedway in the Macri Motorsports No. 39M, finished eighth after pitting and racing from the rear twice. Garrett Bard and Dylan Cisney rounded out the top 10.

Mike Wagner set a blistering lap in warm-ups at 15.794 at over 122 mph. Heat races for the 29 cars were won by Heimbach, Wolfe and Lehman. Dan Shetler won the consolation race.

Shaun Miller led early in the 25-lap Ron Zimmerman Tribute Race for the limited late models. Devin Hart passed Miller in turn one taking the lead with eight laps completed. Taylor Farlling took second from Miller. Andrew Yoder started moving toward the front passing Miller and then challenging Farlling for second. Yoder finally secured second, but Hart had a big lead. Yoder and Coleby Frye made contact racing for second.

A caution slowed the pace with five laps to go.

The Port Royal driver was not to be denied as he pulled away for the $3,500 win. It was his second win of the season on the track. Yoder, Farlling, Frye and Trent Brenneman completed the top five. Miller, Shawn Shoemaker, Ryan Zook, Brad McGinnis and Justin Weaver rounded out the top 10.

Frye had the fastest lap in limited late model qualifying at 19.412. He earned an extra $500. Heat races for the 29 cars were won by Miller, Farlling and Devin Weyandt. Each winner earned an extra $250. Daulton Bigler won the consolation race.

Father and son, Jim and Bryan Bernheisel, shared the front row of the 25-lap late model feature. It was Bryan grabbing the lead over his dad. Ross Robinson raced into second and Trevor Feathers third.

Bryan Bernheisel was looking for a way around slower traffic and Feathers and Greg Satterlee closed on him. Feathers grabbed the lead off turn two with nine laps to go. Satterlee grabbed second with eight to go.

Feathers held on for the $4,000 win, his first of the season at Port Royal. Satterlee, B. Bernheisel, Robinson and point leader Rick Eckert completed the top five. Jeff Rine, Dillan Stake, J. Bernheisel, Dylan Yoder and Nick Dickson rounded out the top 10.

Heat races for the 29 cars were won by Jim Bernheisel, Rick Eckert and Bryan Bernheisel.

Port Royal is off this Saturday night. The Living Legends Dream Race will be made-up on Saturday, Aug. 19 featuring twin 25-lap features for the sprint cars both paying $10,000 to win. The late models will run a 25-lap feature paying $5,000 to win. The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series returns to the speedway on Friday, Aug. 25, and Saturday, Aug. 26. The 50-lap finale will pay $50,000 to win.

Starting at $2.99/week.
