Perfect Day: Mifflin County advances all 12 wrestlers to regionals; MU advances two and Juniata one

Mifflin County’s Parker Kearns controls Central Mountain’s Braylen Corter at 152 pounds.

ALTOONA — Mifflin County had a record-setting day at the District 6 Class 3A Championships on Saturday at the Altoona Fieldhouse.

The Huskies brought a 12-man contingent into districts, and all 12 qualified for the Northwest Regional tournament this Friday and Saturday back in Altoona. The 12 qualifiers are a new school record, breaking last season’s previous record of 11.

“Looking at the brackets and the kids that were there, we realistically thought we could get all 12 through. We had to win some key matches and those went our way,” Mifflin County coach Kirby Martin said. “I’m very excited. For many of the kids, this will be their first trip to regionals and that experience is huge. We have to get them into those situations so they know what it’s like and why we prepare the way we do. Hopefully, they have some success.”

Hunter Johnson (121) and Deakon Schaeffer (160) won district titles to lead Mifflin County, which finished second in the team race with 189.5 points, four points behind Central Mountain.

“I’m very excited for them. Now they can get their names up on the wall in the room and that’s definitely a goal for our kids,” Martin said. “They wrestled great. I want them to continue to wrestle this way deep into the postseason.”

Johnson (17-2) had a bye in the semis before crushing Altoona’s Philip Sarbo by a 15-0 technical fall in the finals. The Husky senior captured his first district title in impressive fashion with two takedowns, a reversal, six nearfall points, an escape, and two stall points.

Schaeffer brought home his first district crown with a gritty 3-2 decision over Central Mountain’s Geno Serafini. The Husky junior, down 1-0 after two periods, escaped and scored the lone takedown of the match early in the third. Schaeffer (28-8) defeated Alijah Gibson of Johnstown by fall in the semifinals.

“I am happy. One of the biggest things I wanted was to have that banner up in the mat room, so going in there next year and looking at that will make me happy every day,” Schaeffer said. “In the finals, I wanted to get my snaps going and move him around more. I didn’t do that as well as I wanted to. He circled more than I expected. Honestly, he ran the whole match. Every time we wrestle, he does that. I wasn’t happy with 3-2, but I’m going to focus on being better next week.”

Coming up short in the finals were Styers Oden (114), Parker Kearns (152), Avery Aurand (172), Truitt Davis (215), and Peyton Kearns (285).

Oden fell to Hollidaysburg’s Carson Krupka by fall in 1:25. Parker Kearns lost a tough 3-1 decision to top-seeded Luke Sipes of Altoona. Aurand suffered a fall at the hands of State College’s Carter Weaverling. Davis came up short in a 7-3 loss to Central Mountain’s Giovanni Tarantella. Peyton Kearns ran into second-ranked Nick Pavlechko of State College and lost by fall in 1:05.

The Huskies went 5-for-5 in the third-place matches (the blood round).

Kamden Everly (127), Blake Aumiller (133), Lucas Sheetz (139), Jacob Cunningham (145), and Gavin Mickey (189) moved on to regionals by finishing third.

“That was what we were hoping for. All the kids in that round wrestled great. They went out and were aggressive. It didn’t look like we were holding back, which is good. We want kids to wrestle with an open style and score points,” Martin said.

Everly took out Carnell Noone of Central Mountain 4-0; Aumiller pinned Hollidaysburg’s Mason Schenck in 1:56; Sheetz majored Johnstown’s Jorge Morales 13-5, Cunningham decked Altoona’s Eli Wisor in 1:54, and Mickey came through with a 12-1 major decision over Evan Boose of Altoona.

“That’s awesome having the whole team going to regionals. That shows how hard we work. As one of the leaders on the team, you love to see it,” Schaeffer said. “We’re all going to be having fun at regionals, and hopefully, we all make it out.”

Mifflin County moves on to the Northwest Regional this Friday with first-round action at 4:30 p.m.

Class AA

Mount Union claimed two champions and advanced five into the Southwest Regional at the District 6, Class 2A tournament on Saturday.

Mason Beatty (107) and Josh Ryan (189) brought home district gold. Jacik Hess took second at 127, while A.J. Chilcote (121) and Deegan Rittenhouse (160) were sixth. Mount Union also had a seventh from Vance Hower (139) and an eighth from Kamden Beatty (114).

Juniata had one qualifier in Taylor Smith, who finished second at 139. Harrison Mummah placed seventh at 172.

Mason Beatty (33-7) eked out a tough 4-2 decision over Tyrone’s Korry Walls in the finals. The Trojan senior had a takedown in the first and an escape in the second and third periods for the win. He reached the finals with a 5-0 win over Jacob Sombronski of United.

In the finals, Ryan (34-8) made his second-period reversal standup in a 2-0 victory over Bald Eagle Area’s Cameron Dubbs. The Trojan sophomore rode out Dubbs in the third period. Ryan reached the finals with a 10-6 win over Bellefonte’s Addison Shawley.

Hess (29-10) lost a 13-1 major decision to top-seeded Coen Bainey of BEA in the finals. The Eagle senior, headed to American University to wrestle in college, dominated on top with nine nearfall points. The Trojan freshman reached the finals with a 7-6 win over Huntingdon’s Landon Dunsmore.

Chilcote dropped his fifth-place bout to Braydon Lisowski of Penns Valley 8-5, while Rittenhouse came up short for fifth with a 10-4 setback to Penns Valley’s David Martin.

The Indians had a horrendous start to their Saturday, going 1-7 in the fourth round of consolations. Smith (31-5) was the bright spot. The senior advanced to the finals with a 6-1 decision over Bellefonte’s Noah Weaver in the semis.

“The conversation we had with those guys after that round yesterday was, basically, you’re young, you made a lot of freshman or sophomore mistakes, and you still were within one match or two of making it to regionals,” Barrick said. “We’ll go back to the drawing board, fix those mistakes, and they’ll be a year or two older and more mature, ready to compete for a district title or a high district place finish instead of trying to eke in as the fifth or sixth-place guy.”

Smith fell short in the finals, losing 4-3 to Marion Center’s Liam Cornetto.

“He wrestled well the whole way through, even the Cornetto match. We had a couple of little mistakes that cost us in the end,” Juniata co-coach Adam Barrick said. “We were winning a good chunk of that match. He wrestled solid. He won his semifinal match against a kid he should have probably scored more points on. He wrestled a smart tournament overall. He’s a little banged up right now, and he didn’t do anything to make it worse.”

After a scoreless first, Cornetto chose bottom and escaped to make it 1-0. Smith scored a takedown before Cornetto got out again to make it 2-2 heading into the third. The Indian senior took down for period three and escaped to hold a slim 3-2 advantage. Cornetto scored the winning takedown with 1:19 left in regulation.

Smith is now 0-2 against the Stinger. Cornetto defeated Smith 5-3 in sudden victory at the Ultimate Warrior in January.

“We have to put six minutes together without those little mistakes (against Cornetto). We don’t have to make any big changes,” Barrick said. “We need to clean up some little mistakes in technique, and he’ll be okay. Taylor is confident. He’s disappointed not winning the district title, but the goal isn’t to win district or regional titles. The goal is hardware at Hershey. He’s on track to do that, and we’re going to keep plugging away.”

The Southwest Regional begins in two weeks, Friday, March 3, at the Altoona Fieldhouse. This marks the first time they will hold the regional in Altoona.
