Volunteers sought to document stories of Pa.’s WWII fallen
LEWISTOWN — A statewide effort to preserve the stories of Pennsylvania service members killed in World War II is seeking additional volunteer writers, including in Mifflin County.
The project, led by Franklin County resident Kathy Harmon through the nonprofit Stories Behind the Stars, aims to document the lives of the nearly 31,900 Pennsylvanians who died during the war. So far, more than 11,000 stories have been completed and published on Fold3.com.
In Mifflin County, 122 service members died during World War II, with 71 of those individuals already memorialized through the project.
Organizers said the effort is part of a national initiative to ensure the stories of more than 421,000 Americans who died in the war are preserved and accessible to the public. The memorials are also linked to gravesite information, allowing visitors to learn about service members’ lives and sacrifices.
Harmon said she hopes to expand the group of volunteer writers, noting the work can be done remotely and at an individual pace. Volunteers are provided free access to research tools, including Fold3, Ancestry and Newspapers.com.
Those interested in participating can find more information through the Stories Behind the Stars website or by contacting organizers directly.
