LEWISTOWN — Madden Weaver pitched a complete game with only one hit allowed to lift the Mifflin County baseball team over Central Dauphin, 6-1, on Thursday.

“I have been on this team for four years and this was my first varsity start,” Weaver said. “I was just waiting for this moment. I was supposed to pitch on opening day but it got rained out. That probably added fuel to the fire as well.”

Weaver struck eight batters including three straight to begin the game. He allowed only one earned run because of walks and a sacrifice fly in the third inning.

“He has been working really hard for this,” Mifflin County head coach Ray Hoppel said. “He was dominant today against a really good team. I can’t be more pleased for what happened.”

Weaver also got a fair amount of run support and good defense throughout the game. Including diving catches and only one error in the field.

“As a pitcher, you want a cushion,” Weaver said. “A five-run cushion, I’m proud of our team.”

The Huskies took a 2-0 lead in the first inning that included an Easton Lepley RBI single. Lepley would also launch a two-run home run in the fifth inning to put the Huskies ahead 5-1. He would finish 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

“He has been close to those a lot,” Hoppel noted. “That is his first varsity home run. I know he has been working hard for that. He has had a really strong last couple weeks from the plate. So I’m hoping that kinda carries him through the rest of the season.”

Other strong performers for Mifflin County included Jayden Smith going 2-for-3 with an RBI and Lincoln Ruble going 2-for-3. The game ended with a lineout double play to Smith at first base who stepped onto first to get out the runner and end the game.

“They are second in the league, for us to win and win the way we did, it makes me feel really good about the way we are playing right now,” Hoppel said.

Mifflin County (6-3) has won five in a row. They will look to keep their streak going at State College at 4:15 on Monday.

“Ultimately, you want to try and be peaking by the end of the year,” Hoppel said. “But you gotta stack wins in the middle of the season for that to happen. So we will keep working and hopefully things will go well for us.”
