Bags, books and brain Teasers: Library sale goes ‘Puzzle Palooza’

MIFFLINTOWN — Call it a “puzzle palooza.”

That’s the phrase volunteers are using — and with good reason — as the Friends of the Juniata County Library prepare for their one-day book bag sale on Wednesday, June 11.

From 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., the Juniata County Library, located at 498 Jefferson St. in Mifflintown, will be filled with books, movies, music –and an eye-catching surge of jigsaw puzzles that’s turning this year’s event into something extra special.

At the center of it all is a remarkable donation: a pickup truck load of puzzles, given by two men who were clearing out their mother’s home. The contribution has transformed the sale room into a puzzle lover’s paradise, with everything from simple, family-friendly sets to detailed designs meant to challenge even seasoned puzzlers.

The variety is striking. Brightly colored boxes line tables and shelves, offering a mix of scenic landscapes, nostalgic images and intricate designs. Most puzzles will be priced at $3, but some gently used sets will be available for just $1, giving shoppers even more reason to stock up for quiet evenings, rainy weekends or family game nights.

While the puzzle selection is grabbing attention, the sale’s biggest draw remains the popular $7 bag deal. For that price, shoppers can fill a bag to the brim with books, CDs, DVDs and magazines. It’s a simple concept that brings out both casual browsers and serious bargain hunters — and often turns into a friendly challenge of how much can fit into a single bag.

This year’s event also reflects a strong showing of community support, thanks in part to Juniata County student Graydon Cunningham. As part of his Junior National Honor Society project, Cunningham organized a community-wide collection drive, gathering boxes of donated books, DVDs and magazines. His efforts significantly boosted the sale’s inventory while highlighting the connection between young volunteers and the library they serve.

Organizers say the combined contributions have made this one of the most well-stocked sales in recent memory. Tables are expected to stay full throughout the day, with volunteers restocking items as shoppers browse. That steady turnover means there’s just as much incentive to stop in later in the day as there is to arrive early.

That element of surprise is part of what keeps people coming back year after year. Attendees often find hidden gems among the stacks — favorite authors, classic films or unexpected finds that catch their eye. The relaxed atmosphere encourages people to take their time, strike up conversations and enjoy the experience as much as the bargains.

Proceeds from the sale directly support the Friends of the Juniata County Library, a volunteer organization dedicated to enhancing library programs and services. The funds help provide children’s activities, educational programming and special events that benefit residents across the community.

For many, the sale has become more than just a shopping trip — it’s a tradition. Neighbors reconnect, families browse together and longtime supporters gather to celebrate a shared community resource.

With an abundance of materials and a standout puzzle selection, this year’s event offers something for every interest and every age group. Whether visitors come looking to build their home library, pick up entertainment for summer or dive into a new puzzle challenge, they’re likely to leave with a full bag and a smile.

And with tables overflowing and puzzles stacked high, this “puzzle palooza” promises plenty of surprises — one piece at a time.
