Four Huskies among Mid Penn baseball All-Stars
Hoppel earns second coach of year in three seasons
LEWISTOWN — Typically, first-evers come with a lot of pomp and circumstance. That’s what the Mifflin County Huskies are receiving fresh off winning a Mid Penn Commonwealth Division title — a first-time achievement for the Husky baseball program.
When the Mid Penn announced its all-division squads on Friday, it came as no surprise that Mifflin County garnered four All-Star nods along with Coach of the Year honors.
Karl Shirey led the way as a first-team all-Mid Penn selection for the Huskies. Shirey hit .450 this season with two home runs and a team-leading 22 RBIs.
A pair of Huskies headline the second team with Evan Strohecker, who batted .385, and Chase Hartung. Jayden Smith, a .320 hitter this year, rounded out the selections as a third team all-division pick.
Mifflin County head coach Ray Hoppel, who is in his third season, received Coach of the Year honors. It marks the second team in three years that Hoppel has won the award.
Shirey was joined on the Mid Penn first team all-division by Eric McAllister, of Altoona; Chase Shrader, of Central Dauphin; Peyton Price and Blake Secrest, of Cedar Cliff; Ryne Mills and Brady Truett, both of Chambersburg; James Markowitz and Grady Weaver, of Mechanicsburg; and Connor Kulka, of State College.
Besides Strohecker and Hartung, the second team featured Tanner Stroup, of Altoona; Tommy Powell, of Central Dauphin; Grant Enders, of Cedar Cliff; Ceagan Truett, of Chambersburg; Caiden Valentino, of Mechanicsburg; and Michael Powell and Rowan Walker, of State College.
After Smith, the third team had Nick Kraft and Connor Waite, of Altoona; Alex Scaringi, of Central Dauphin; Owen Anastasi, Michael Boblick and Caden Bryan, of Cedar Cliff; Michael LaPila and Andrew Firestone, of Cumberland Valley; and Cody Norman, of State College.
Price was honored as the Commonwealth Player of the Year.
SOFTBALL
Mifflin County had two selections on the Mid Penn softball all-division selections as Ava Baker was a second-team pick and Piper Specht made the third team.
The first team consisted of Kayla Fletcher, Autumn Andreoli and Abby Rheem, of Central Dauphin; Erissa Varner, Issie Swimmer and Adison Giselle, of Chambersburg; Lauren Richardson, of Cumberland Valley; Kayla Yohe and Mia Masser, of Mechanicsburg; and Kendall Schenck, of State College.
Besides Baker, the second team all-division had Kaya Sprankle, of Altoona; Rosie Reese, Isabel Rodriquez and Bryann Barkley, of Central Dauphin; Kylee Perry, of Chambersburg; Emma Stroup, of Chambersburg; Paige Moriarta of State College; and Maddie Billus, of Cedar Cliff.
Rounding out the third team was Kara Rinehart, of State College; Jayda Yost, of Altoona; Alyssa Hill, of Central Dauphin; Marley OnoMastico and Kendall Flory, of Chambersburg; Janelle Schneider and Brooke Yasenchak, of Cumberland Valley; Asha Pratt, of Mechanicsburg; and Skyler Reed, of Altoona.
Fletcher won Player of the Year honors, while Christian Skulteti, of Chambersburg won Coach of the Year accolades.
BOYS LACROSSE
Dodger Weaver was the only Husky player to receive league honors as he was named to the Commonwealth third team all-division. Cumberland Valley and Mechanicsburg each dominated the first team with three picks. Mechanicsburg’s Rece Miller was named the Player of the Year, while Coach of the Year honors went to Ryan Hilliard, of Carlisle.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Mifflin County’s Issabella Snyder made the Commonwealth Third Team All-Division. Cumberland Valley led all schools with three first-team selections, including Player of the Year Payton Bashore, and also Coach of the Year in Karen Keitel.
SPORTSMANSHIP AWARDS
Mifflin County won the Sportsmanship Award in softball.
