PennDOT offers free waste material to property owners

From staff reports

LEWISTOWN — Property owners in Mifflin County can obtain free fill material during upcoming roadway maintenance projects, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

PennDOT officials said the material — typically soil removed from road shoulders and drainage ditches — will be available throughout the spring and summer as crews perform routine maintenance to improve roadway drainage.

Residents interested in receiving the material must have property accessible near active work areas and submit a request form to PennDOT’s county maintenance office. In Mifflin County, requests can be made through the department’s facility on West Fourth Street in Lewistown.

The material is generated during operations such as shoulder cutting and ditch cleaning, which are part of PennDOT’s ongoing efforts to maintain safe and efficient roadways.

Officials noted that while PennDOT crews are a common sight across the state, many residents may not be aware of the range of maintenance work performed each year across thousands of miles of roadway.

In addition to maintenance operations, PennDOT is also continuing its summer employment program, which hires seasonal workers to assist with roadway and bridge upkeep statewide.

More information about requesting material or applying for seasonal positions is available through PennDOT offices and the state employment website.

Starting at $2.99/week.
