East Waterford Festival set to bring patriotic spirit, new events to longtime tradition
EAST WATERFORD — In the quiet early days of July, when flags hang heavy in the summer heat and the ridges around Horse Valley glow blue in the evening haze, East Waterford begins to feel like the kind of place where Independence Day still means something.
It’s the kind of place where families mark the calendar months ahead, where neighbors talk about the festival the way others talk about holidays, and where the red, white and blue isn’t just decoration but part of the town’s identity.
That spirit returns Saturday as the East Waterford Fourth of July Independence Day Celebration opens its gates for a full day of celebration, competition and community pride. Organizers say this year’s event will carry an even stronger patriotic theme as Juniata County continues its America 250 observances.
The Tuscarora Fairgrounds, located at 9406 Route 75 in East Waterford, will come alive early, thanks to a new addition this year: the event’s first Tuscarora 5K Run/Walk. A handful of runners have already pre-registered, and organizers expect more to sign up the morning of the race. They say the new event is a way to bring fresh energy to a day already rooted in tradition. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m., with the event kicking off at 9 a.m. The registration fee is $25.
One of those traditions, the Fourth Annual Cornhole Tournament, has grown into a major draw. What began years ago as a friendly backyard-style contest now brings in 75 teams and nearly $2,000 in prize money. Daniel Love, one of the organizers of the annual event, said the added purse has helped fuel excitement.
“People get excited when they know they can win some money,” added Love, noting that the tournament has become one of the festival’s most anticipated competitions.
Don’t forget to bring your own lawn chairs for the live entertainment, with national touring artists entertainment from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. featuring the Larry Delawder Family as well as Randy Simpson and Elvis tribute artist David King.
The area’s largest parade, always a centerpiece of the day, will carry extra patriotic flair at 3 p.m. Parade coordinator Jess Harrop is adding special trophies and awards on behalf of America 250 Juniata County, alongside the festival’s regular parade prizes. The new awards are meant to highlight the county’s role in the nationwide celebration of America’s 250th birthday and encourage entries that reflect local pride.
“I think we could have a couple of thousand folks throughout the day,” Love explained.
If the weather cooperates — even with the steamy heat expected — organizers anticipate a couple thousand people passing through the grounds throughout the day. Many will stay into the evening for one of the festival’s most unique traditions: the fireworks display in nearby Horse Valley.
The valley’s geography creates a dramatic setting for the show. The mountain walls hold the smoke and echo the sound, turning the display into a loud, vivid, almost theatrical experience. Organizers say the 40-minute show draws people from across the area every year.
That’s at 4345 Horse Valley Road, where the festivities start at 10 a.m. with a flea market. Helicopter rides follow at noon, along with a food menu featuring smoked pulled pork, brisket and Antietam Dairy ice cream.
After the Withered Band takes the stage at 5:30 p.m., fireworks close out the night at 9:30 p.m.
“It’s loud, you see it better and it’s really neat,” they said. “A lot of people come out on Saturday. It’s always a big day for the community. We’re excited to see everyone come out.”

The Reedsville Community Association has put together an America250 event that spans the month of July. Starting Wednesday, there will be an installation of large posters in various business windows on the history of the United States for America250. These will be on display through July 31.
A series of painted footsteps will lead to the locations to the north and south of the traffic signal in downtown Reedsville. This provides a great opportunity for people to refresh themselves on bits of history and introduce children to the same:

Patriotic music
The Founding Fathers
United States Presidents
History of the Pledge of Allegiance
History of the Star Spangled Banner
