BELLEFONTE — A 40-year-old inmate at SCI Benner Township died Saturday after being found unresponsive in his cell, prison officials said.

Keith Levan was pronounced dead April 11, 2026, by emergency medical services personnel following consultation with Mount Nittany Medical Center, according to Superintendent Bradley M. Booher.

Staff discovered Levan unresponsive in his cell and initiated life-saving measures until EMS arrived.

Levan had been serving a four- to 10-year sentence for failure to comply with sexual offender registration requirements stemming from a Columbia County conviction. He was transferred to SCI Benner Township on Feb. 3, 2026, from SCI Houtzdale.

The Pennsylvania State Police will investigate, in accordance with state policy. Prison officials said the inmate’s next of kin has been notified.
