YEAGERTOWN — The Mifflin County Regional Police Department and county officials are continuing to investigate a fatal two-vehicle accident Saturday morning that claimed the life of a Juniata County man.

At 3:09 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to a fiery accident in the eastbound lane of Route 322, near the border of Derry and Brown townships.

On Sunday, Acting Mifflin County Coroner Andrea L. Alcalde said that Matthew B. Dreese, 36, of McAlisterville, was killed in the crash. She said Dreese was traveling west in the eastbound lane on the twin bridges in a Jeep Wrangler and struck a tractor trailer head on.

Alcalde said Dreese was pronounced dead at the scene. She added the cause of death is still pending investigation at this time.

Police offered a few additional details.

“I can confirm there was a fatal crash in the eastbound lane at the double bridges and an occupant in one of the vehicles died as a result,” said Sgt. John Miles of the Mifflin County Regional Police Department.

Police said the accident involved a tractor trailer and a car. Both the east- and west-bound lanes were closed for more than six hours as police said traffic resumed around 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

An image, posted on the Mifflin County Alerts page on Facebook, showed a fiery crash scene with at least one vehicle appearing to be fully engulfed.

Authorities have not released the identities of anyone involved in the accident. The roadway in that section of Route 322 is currently under construction.

John Goss of Milroy was driving home from work at Standard Steel in Burnham on old Route 322 in the area of the Reedsville Narrows. He saw the flames from the accident illuminating the sky.

A former firefighter and EMT for years, Goss said, “It lit up the whole narrows with a large explosion.”

Miles said fire departments from Milroy, Burnham, Yeagertown and Reedsville responded, along with the Heritage Volunteer and Junction fire companies from Lewistown. Milroy and FAME ambulance companies also assisted.
