Tax coal and natural gas companies To the Editor: When the market for coal collapsed, the coal companies “closed their doors and left town.” Leaving behind acid mine drainage, coal breakers, deep mines, open strip mines and pits and other environmental perils, and no money with which to pay for the cleanup. When the coal market was booming, the coal-producing states should have been taxing the coal companies profits to establish environmental funds to restore the environment to its natural state. At the present time, the natural gas-producing states should be taxing the ...

Fossil fuels and renewables To the Editor: Jackson Morris’s article “Fossil Fuels are unreliable,” Daily Item, Oct 11, is misleading. True nearly 40% of the natural gas plants in PA failed last winter but why? “Plant operators didn’t have the supply of gas they needed and waited far too long to tell anyone they couldn’t run. Many plants held gas contracts that didn’t provide them with a guaranteed supply, while others dealt with supply cuts because local gas utilities received priority to heat homes.” So, is it a reliability issue or a supply issue? Texas plants ...

GOD will save you in end times To the Editor: People, you see what is going on in Israel and the Middle East at the present time. You have seen and heard some of the news reports, and they continue to come in. The death toll continues to rise including at least nine Americans. And what effect does this have on America? Because this administration made all kinds of changes in our energy policies just to do the opposite of the Trump administration. We used to have cheap ...

Liberals believe they’re right even when wrong

Liberals believe they’re right even when wrong To the Editor: Since the BLM riots in 2020 black shoplifters and car jackers are still running wild in the streets without uniform prosecution. Chain stores like Target are closing in cities across the nation. Mostly in Democratically controlled cities. The store management is citing employee safety and financial losses from smash and grab crime as the reasons. That is the BLM legacy! More crime! Be proud Liberals! Who else could champion the unfortunate, claimed to have done historic justice for them,  then let them fall even ...

Mount Union School District is in crisis To the Editor: I want to call attention to the Mount Union School District crisis. I am part of a group that has worked for almost two years to improve this situation. In my opinion, the most significant parts of this crisis are a $3.6 million budget deficit, the superintendent’s style, a mass exodus of teachers, and a school board that sits idly by. This significant turnover of teachers is a massive strain on the remaining teachers. They are trying to mentor many new teachers with emergency certificates who still need to gain a background ...

Samaritan’s Purse Christmas shoe boxes It’s that time of the year again, time for Samaritan’s Purse Christmas Shoe Boxes. Children around the world receive shoe boxes packed with gifts – children who otherwise would not receive any Christmas gifts. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents and grandparents to teach their children about giving to others- rather than getting gifts. Involve children in the purchases for the shoebox. Encourage them to choose items they themselves would like to receive. Explain that for many children gifts at Christmas simply do not happen. A ...
