Mount Union School District is in crisis
To the Editor:
I want to call attention to the Mount Union School District crisis. I am part of a group that has worked for almost two years to improve this situation.
In my opinion, the most significant parts of this crisis are a $3.6 million budget deficit, the superintendent's style, a mass exodus of teachers, and a school board that sits idly by.
This significant turnover of teachers is a massive strain on the remaining teachers. They are trying to mentor many new teachers with emergency certificates who still need to gain a background in education. All of this eventually filters down to the students.
Sadly, it creates an educational system that fails our students. I have attended many school board meetings over the past two years. In my opinion, the board's response to the multiple problems brought to their attention has been to remain silent or shift the blame elsewhere.
Because everything has stayed the same despite all the appeals from myself and others, it is evident that only the right board members will correct our school district. I recommend and endorse Curt Whitesel and Lee Forgy in Region 1 and Kristin Shields in Region 2 for the school board in the November election. They all have children in the district. They care deeply about our students and the community. Please remember our students when you vote.
