PORT ROYAL — The 33rd edition of Pennsylvania Sprinat Car Speedweek finally came to a close Tuesday night at Port Royal Speedway.

The series was hampered by rain with four races rained out. Two others were postponed and completed on another date, including the Keith Kauffman Classic at Port Royal that was rained out Monday night.

In the end, it was Dillsburg’s Anthony Macri winning $15,000 in the Kauffman Classic and clinching his first career Speedweek championship as well. Macri won three races and finished second three times during Speedweek. He became the 11th different driver to win the Speedweek series.

“I wish there would have been less rainouts,” Macri said. “But, sometimes the weather doesn’t cooperate. My guys worked hard all week.”

Macri beat 2022 champion Brent Marks by 163 points (989-826). Justin Peck, Freddie Rahmer and Kyle Reinhardt were in the top five. Marks won two races, but a crash at BAPS cost him valuable points. Rahmer won at Lincoln on Thursday.

Five-time track champion Logan Wagner started on the pole of the 30-lap feature with his father, Mike, to his outside. A backstretch crash stopped the race following the initial start. Contact towards the back of the field caused TJ Stutts to flip over the inside fence. He was okay.

L. Wagner grabbed the lead on the restart as fourth starting Macri raced by M. Wagner off turn two and into the runner-up spot. Lance Dewease challenged M. Wagner for third before another red stopped the race. Danny Dietrich crashed in turn three. He was okay.

L. Wagner held off Macri on the restart as Brent Marks and Devon Borden both passed Dewease.

A caution slowed the field with five laps completed.

He controlled the restart again as Marks passed M. Wagner for the third spot.

Dewease tried to break back into the top five with a pass of Borden.

The leaders broke away from the field and closed on slower traffic by the half-way point. Macri drove by and into the lead off the second turn and down the backstretch.

“I was worried at the beginning, but my car kept getting better as the race went on,” Macri said.

Macri was racing in heavy slower traffic, but had a 3-second lead as Marks caught L. Wagner for the runner-up spot.

With 10 laps to go, Macri was in complete control. His lead was over 5-seconds as he sliced through traffic.

Meanwhile, the racing was great behind them as four cars raced hard for spots inside the top five. Dewease raced back up for fourth while 14th starter Justin Peck was also in the mix with Borden and M. Wagner.

Borden jumped the first turn cushion, got into the fence and flipped with four laps to go. He was okay. The third stoppage of the race erased Macri’s huge lead.

Macri controlled the restart blasting away from L. Wagner and the field.

“I knew I was making really good speed on the top,” Macri said. “I was going to run the top and if he passed me, so be it. I knew where my car was the best. I tried not to overthink it and just keep my pace up.”

The battle raged behind him, but it was all Macri out front as he won by 2.6 seconds. L. Wagner, M. Wagner, Marks and Peck completed the top five. Dewease, Justin Whittall, Michael Walter II, Kyle Reinhardt, and Freddie Rahmer rounded out the top 10.

A total of 35 cars were on hand. Dewease had the fastest lap in qualifying time trials with a lap of 16.142 and earned $300. Borden, Whittall, L. Wagner and Reinhardt completed the top five in time trials. Reinhardt nipped Dewease at the line to win the first heat race. Macri beat Borden in the second heat. Marks beat Rahmer in the third. Mike Wagner won the final heat over Dietrich. Each heat winner earned $100. Port Royal’s Mayor Dylan Cisney, driving a throw-back Kauffman No. K33, won the B-main.

Port Royal returns to action Saturday night at 7 featuring the sprint cars, late models and limited late models. It will be Kids Night as well. The Greg Hodnett Classic that was rained out Saturday night at the speedway will be made up later this summer.

Starting at $2.99/week.
