Major road projects planned across region
From staff reports
LEWISTOWN — More than $10 million in road and bridge work is planned this construction season in Mifflin and Juniata counties as part of a broader $212 million investment across the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation District 2 region.
PennDOT officials said the investment will fund 80 projects across the nine-county region, including improvements to more than 115 miles of roadway and repairs or replacements to 77 bridges.
Among the largest local projects is a $5.7 million highway restoration project along Route 22 between Arch Rock and Mifflintown in Mifflin and Juniata counties. PennDOT said work on the more than 16-mile project resumed in early March and is expected to continue through Labor Day.
In Mifflin County, PennDOT also plans a $4.9 million resurfacing project along Route 522 from Lewistown to the Snyder County line.
In Juniata County, a $1.3 million bridge replacement project is planned for Route 235 over Stoney Run in Greenwood Township.
In neighboring Centre County, construction continues on the $259.3 million high-speed interchange project connecting Interstates 80 and 99 near the Bellefonte Interchange in Marion Township. PennDOT said the project is intended to improve traffic safety and reduce congestion along Route 26 by creating a direct interstate connection.
Additional Centre County projects include:
• An $8.6 million restoration project along Route 26 (Jacksonville Road) near the Bellefonte Interchange.
• A $3.1 million bridge preservation project impacting 15 structures and 11 roadway sections along I-99.
• A $1 million highway restoration and drainage improvement project along Route 144 near
Centre Hall.
• A $720,000 safety improvement project to construct a truck pull-off along eastbound Route 322 at Port Mountain in Rush Township.
Elsewhere in the region, PennDOT highlighted projects in Cameron, Clearfield, Clinton, Elk, McKean and Potter counties, including interstate preservation work along I-80 in Clearfield County, roadway restoration projects and several bridge replacements.
PennDOT urged motorists to use caution in work zones and reminded drivers to obey posted speed limits, watch for flaggers and avoid distractions while traveling through construction areas.
