April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month To the editor: April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. This year’s theme is “Building Safe Online Spaces Together.” Sexual harassment, assault and abuse can happen anywhere, including in online spaces. For too long harassment, cyberbullying and sexual abuse and exploitation have come to be expected as typical and unavoidable behaviors online. Building Safe Online Spaces Together is possible when we practice digital consent, intervene when we see harmful content and behaviors, and promote online communities that value respect, inclusion ...

Cherry-picking facts doesn’t prove anything To the editor: This is a reply to Ken Schucht’s April 14 letter to the editor. OMG can it be true, Republicans are fiscally responsible? Do they really try to prevent excessive government spending? Do they really feel less government is better? What Mr. Schucht stated is no doubt true. Cherry-picking political votes and statements made by Republicans from history proves little. Just last year in the Build Back Better bill there was so much pork attached that no one with common sense was willing to vote for it. I am not going to ...

Outrage over trans athletes is manufactured To the editor: Recently, I had the unfortunate experience of hearing Riley Gains display her lack of sportsmanship and outright ignorance and intolerance toward a competing athlete, Lia Thomas. These two swimmers tied for fifth place. As anyone that has been to a meet/match/race whatever you call these things (I don’t know the details of sports though I have been to watch my nephews compete) can understand that they do not have on hand duplicates of trophies on the off chance that there is a tie. Someone had to hold the sixth place ...

Figuring out why I don’t qualify for free phone

To the editor: One recent morning, I phoned the White House at (202) 456-1111 to find out if I was eligible for a free cellphone like the ones the federal government is providing for the illegals coming across our southern border. Phone rang — no answer. So I called the White House switchboard at (202) 456-1414. The man that answered asked where I had obtained that information. When I said Fox News and CNN had both reported it, he said he was not aware of such a program. Eight years ago I was not eligible for a free “Obama phone” either. Then I realized I’m only a ...

I wonder if I am living in a dream world today To the editor: I wonder if I am living in a dream world today. The southern border of the country is virtually open, with all manner of people from everywhere pouring in, with the probable expectation of free services of various kinds. I can’t think of any other country in the world that would let this happen. And, nobody seems to care. The Administration says nothing about it; the mainstream press say nothing about it, and even the right-wing press don’t question the administration’s spokespeople about the situation. There is ...
