EVs: A pig in a poke?

To the editor: The world needs two billion electric vehicles to get to a CO2 net zero level by 2050. But is there enough lithium to make all the batteries? World Economic Forum, July 20, addresses many EV battery problems. The world could face lithium shortages by 2025, the International Energy Agency (IEA) says. Sales of EVs stood at just 6.6 million last year. At that rate it will be 2300 before the goal is met. Buying Brooklyn Bridge

To the editor: The Brooklyn Bridge has been sold. To whom? To the American taxpayer! How did that happen? Our liberal government did the old bait and switch on us. They said we were all going to die from COVID then put us on the hook for $6 trillion to get shots, research and economic relief. Whoops! What constitutes economic relief? Eliminate rent, pay people not to work, pay businesses who can’t open. Sounds okay to me if it is on a limited basis. We were all blindsided by COVID and some of this funding was necessary. Appreciation for Day of Caring

To the editor: United Way of Mifflin-Juniata kicked off the 2023 annual fundraising campaign with the 25th Annual Day of Caring on Wednesday, Sept. 21. Approximately 330 volunteers spent the day painting, landscaping, building and cleaning. This year’s effort helped 32 different non-profit agencies and government entities throughout Mifflin and Juniata Counties save over $55,000! The assistance that agencies receive through Day of Caring is critical. For the volunteer, the experience was uplifting. Student loan forgiveness reasonable

To the editor: This is in response to all the letters that have been published in the Sentinel concerning the student loan debt forgiveness, which by the way, is only $10,000 per student if you were not given the Pell grant or $20,000 if you were given the Pell Grant. When most of the people that are moaning and groaning about this went to college — more than likely in the 1970s — the cost of attending a private college was the modern equivalent of $17,680 per year or $8,250 per year to attend a public college. Random thoughts on GOP committee letter

To the Editor: 1) It is true that crime is a problem in many cities led by Democrats. But it is also a problem in many areas led by Republicans — for example, 7 of the 10 worst states for gun homicides (per the CDC) have Republican governors. As the letter said, “crime is on the rise everywhere” - so why reduce such a serious subject to the level of a tired Republican talking point? 2) Because crime is a serious subject, it deserves a serious discussion. No correlation between abortion, mass murder

To the editor: This is a reply to Mr. Spahr’s letter in the Sept. 6 edition of The Sentinel. Nowhere in Mr. Spahr’s letter does he successfully refute the premise of my previous letters. There is no correlation between the number of abortions and the number of mass murders in the United States. There is, however, a direct correlation between the number of assault type weapons with large capacity magazines and the number of mass murders in the United States.
