Lessons learned: Support small business To the Editor: My annual week-long fishing trip to the wilds of Potter County was not off to a good start. Within five casts, the chilly waters of Kettle Creek filled my waist waders. They leaked like a sieve and were beyond repair. Fortunately a buddy loaned me his extra chest waders to get me through the week. Problem solved. I appreciated the loan, but I really wanted another pair of waist waders. I briefly considered driving to a store I like to buy a new pair – especially since I have that store’s credit card and enough points to ...

Why do people hate former President Trump? To the Editor: Mr Philip Loewen, in his June 13 letter, assures us that Trump’s trial for campaign funds fraud was legal and fair and that Trump has nothing to complain about. If Mr Loewen had written a longer letter, he would have assured us that $175 million was a reasonable bond charged by that other judge. So, I’ll put Mr Loewen in the Trump-hater category for now. Who are these Trump-haters and how do they get that way? Because of Jan. 6, someone will say. No, they started yelling about Trump before he was elected in 2016, and ...

Words of Jesus Christ inspire compassion To the Editor: I love Mifflin County and its residents. My husband and I have returned to this area twice in the last 60 years. However, I continue to be troubled by the disparities here as well as across the country. As we live and work in this community, I am reminded of the words of the late pastor, Tim Keller, as he quotes Reinhold Niebuhr in the book, “Counterfeit Gods.” “Human beings have very little real control over their lives. Ninety-five percent of what sets the course of their lives is completely outside their control. ...

You make the call To the Editor: Is it worth defying liberals to elect Trump? Should we perpetuate what makes liberals lose their minds. The Liberal’s hate runs so deep for Trump they will destroy America to get their own way for a 4 year term. They can’t see the forest for the trees! We just lived through it. Can we endure another four years of petty juvenile conduct by both political parties. Asinine conduct by liberals shines a beam of light on what is essentially becoming a banana republic! Even comments in the Sentinel lately cannot hide the glee of liberals celebrating the ...

Trump was tried fairly To the Editor: After Mr. Trump’s recent conviction on 34 felony counts, he and his supporters have attempted to portray both his trial and conviction as “corrupt,” “rigged,” and a “sham.” Notably, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson said “This was a purely political exercise, not a legal one.” Speaker Johnson’s assertion that the case against Mr. Trump had a political basis, rather than a legal one, is troubling. The Speaker seems to be overlooking the part played here by the ordinary Americans who made up the grand jury and trial jury. ...

Citizens steamrolled in presidential election To the Editor: How embarrassed are you, of how our Presidential election is shaping up? Mostly negative ads on both sides. Little about policy or direction is said. If you’re not embarrassed you have no pride; your dignity is damaged and you can’t face reality. If you’re under 40 you have the excuse of being brainwashed via your education, lack of civics training, or just plain indifference. If you’re indifferent, you’re likely being cared for by the government and don’t want to upset the status quo. What this country ...
