Why do people hate former President Trump?
To the Editor:
Mr Philip Loewen, in his June 13 letter, assures us that Trump's trial for campaign funds fraud was legal and fair and that Trump has nothing to complain about. If Mr Loewen had written a longer letter, he would have assured us that $175 million was a reasonable bond charged by that other judge. So, I'll put Mr Loewen in the Trump-hater category for now.
Who are these Trump-haters and how do they get that way? Because of Jan. 6, someone will say. No, they started yelling about Trump before he was elected in 2016, and then they went on to claim that he was an illegitimate President, for some reason. If I find a reasonable Trump-hater who is willing to debate, I'll ask him how he got that way; he'll probably say, "Well, Trump had some good policies, but I can't stand his character."
What is it about his character, I will ask. "Well, he goes around upsetting people. He got our NATO partners upset because he wanted them to pay more for defense. That's not good foreign policy. And, how about how he called illegal immigrants criminals and rapists? And you can't forget the crude insult he made about some foreign countries."
I don't forget any of those things. NATO should have been called to account to pay their fair share of the defense budgets. And, as far as illegal immigrants go, we now know that they are not all angels - far from it. Lastly, what about those places he called "s--thole countries."? We all know what he's talking about - places we would never go near.
I wonder if we hate Trump because he's not afraid to say things that we wouldn't. He's a threat to us indirectly because he shines a light on us as we hide behind our curtain of politeness. We hear him speak, and we think, Oh, he's right, but you can't say that.
Let me just say about Trump: no matter what he says, I don't recall that he has ever insulted me. His opponent, on the other hand, insults me regularly. He insults me by lying to me. He insults me by assuming I will believe his lies, a bad one being that he is not involved in his son's "businesses". Now that both sides have accepted that Hunter's laptop is genuine, we are certain that the "big guy" has been in it for 10%. Ten percent of what? The Biden family isn't saying. What has China gotten for the Biden family's big bucks? "Ssssh!" So, when November comes, I will most likely vote for the candidate who doesn't insult me, rather than the one who does.
But wait: November isn't going to be like that. With the Democrats' desperate attempt to hold on to power in the face of Trump leads here and there, it is unthinkable that they will let Biden (whose descent into senility is accelerating) be their candidate. Fasten your seat belts while I give you a forecast of the Democrat National Convention.
The Democrats, excited but fearful, have arrived for the usual hoopla. After the predictable opening speeches, suddenly the curtains part and out totters Joe Biden, to friendly applause. With teleprompters blazing, he tells his audience that he has finished all he wanted to do as President and will step aside for a new candidate. Thunderous applause for all that Joe has accomplished. (Behind the curtain, winks and high-fives all around.) Joe leaves. Chuck Schumer steps up, ready to nominate a new candidate. The arena is hushed, the air electric with tension. Schumer says, "I hereby place in nomination for the Office of President of the United States the name of Michelle Obama, who will lead us to victory in November, becoming our first woman President!" A huge shock of excited surprise from the audience. Schumer goes on to talk about Michelle's Ivy League education, but his most important point hints that Barack will be sitting behind her, guiding her through all the challenges of the Presidency, i.e., pulling her strings. (Backstage, Barack is trotting up and down with glee.) Ecstatic waves of applause roll down from the rafters, and the re-energized Democrats rush out of the doors, on the warpath to November.
What happens in November? I haven't a clue.
