Kearns, Ryan advance at Ultimate Warrior

ALLPORT – Five area wrestlers earned a trip to the podium by advancing to the semifinals on day one of the Ultimate Warrior Tournament on Friday.

Mifflin County had Parker Kearns (152), Deakon Schaeffer (160), and Avery Aurand (172) reach the semis. Mount Union pushed Josh Ryan (215) through, and Midd-West had a semifinalist in Matthew Smith at 139.

The Huskies still have Andrew Alexander (107), Paxton Shawver (114), Kamden Everly (133), Colby Seiler (145), Reese Christine (172), and Gavin Mickey (189) alive in the consolations.

For Juniata, Colten Rowles (133), Harrison Mummah (189), and Kelton Bonnell (215) came through three rounds of wrestlebacks.

The Trojans have A.J. Chilcote (127), Jacik Hess (133), and Haiden Inch (285) still alive, while the Mustangs have Charley Paige (145) joining Smith.

Mifflin County holds down second place in the team race with 106 points, one point ahead of Central Mountain. Reynolds leads with 113 points. Mount Union is ninth with 67 points, Midd-West is 18th with 48.5 points, and Juniata holds down 25th with 38 points.

Kearns dominated his competition on day one, scoring two technical falls and a 7-1 decision. The Husky senior meets Altoona’s Luke Sipes in the semifinals Saturday morning.

Schaeffer collected two falls and an 8-1 decision in the quarters. He will take on Central York’s Carter Davis in the semis.

Aurand became the third Husky in the semifinals with a fall and two decisions, including a tight 4-1 win in the quarterfinals over Jimmy Mitkowski of Lake Lehman. The Husky junior faces Hollidaysburg’s Mitchell Baronner in the semis.

Ryan, the Trojan junior, racked up two pins and a 2-1 decision to reach the semifinals. He hooks up with Central Mountain’s Rocco Serafini in the semifinals.

Smith continued his solid wrestling, advancing through the winner’s bracket with a tech fall, a fall and a 5-0 decision. The Mustang junior meets Philipsburg-Osceola’s Marcus Gable in the semis.

Fourth round consolation action gets underway today at 9:00 a.m. with the semifinals to follow at 11 a.m. The finals are set for 5:15 p.m.
