ALLPORT — Mifflin County’s Avery Aurand led the way for the local wrestlers with a second-place finish at 172 pounds at the Ultimate Warrior Tournament on Saturday.

In addition to Aurand, nine other wrestlers made the podium with the Huskies placing Parker Kearns (third at 152), Deakon Schaeffer (fourth at 160), Kamden Everly (sixth at 133), Gavin Mickey (sixth at 189), and Andrew “Goo” Alexander (eighth at 107).

Midd-West got a fourth from Matthew Smith (139) and an eighth from Charley Paige (145). Mount Union had Josh Ryan finish fourth at 215, and Juniata had an eighth-place finish from Colten Rowles (133).

Aurand (27-6) came up just short of an Ultimate Warrior championship and had to settle for second place after being pinned in 7:27 by Kyle Scott of Tyrone in the overtime tiebreaker.

After a scoreless first period, Aurand chose down, and Scott rode him out with a bar and tight waste.

Scott chose down to start the third and escaped to make it 1-0. The Husky junior hit a beautiful ankle pick to take a 2-1 lead with 50 seconds left. Scott escaped to make it 2-2 and send the match into the sudden victory.

After a scoreless minute of overtime, Scott won the flip and chose bottom. The Golden Eagle sophomore reversed Aurand straight into a cradle and recorded the fall for the victory. Aurand earned his trip to the finals with a fall in 3:48 over Hollidaysburg’s Mitchell Baronner in the semis.

Kearns (28-4), ranked fifth in the state, dropped a tough 4-3 match to third-ranked Luke Sipes of Altoona in the semifinals. The Husky senior held a 3-1 lead before Sipes scored an escape and takedown in the third for the win.

Kearns came back with a 3-1 victory for third over Central York’s Wyatt Dillon on an escape with five seconds left for the win.

Schaeffer (30-6), also a senior, lost to Vito Gentile of Reynolds 5-3 for third place. Schaeffer fell into the consolations after dropping a 5-2 decision to Central York’s Carter Davis in the semifinals.

Kearns and Schaeffer both achieved a significant accomplishment at Ultimate Warrior as they joined the 100-win club for the Huskies. Kearns is now 100-30 for his career, and Schaeffer stands at 100-33.

Everly (20-14) lost by fall to Canton’s Carson Rockwell for sixth, while Mickey (23-11) lost by a tough 1-0 decision to Jusso Young of Port Allegany for sixth. Alexander (23-12) took eighth after being pinned by Sullivan County’s Andrew Kapec at 1:31.

Smith (27-3) cruised to the semifinals for Midd-West until he ran into Philipsburg-Osceola’s Marcus Gable. Gable came away with the 6-2 victory, knocking Smith into the consolations. The Mustang junior settled for fourth after being pinned by Caden Bell of Reynolds in 4:07.

Paige (21-9) lost 8-2 to Westmont-Hilltop’s David Ray for eighth.

Ryan (32-6) advanced to the semifinals for Mount Union before losing to Central Mountain’s Rocco Serafini, 8-4. The Trojan junior came up short for third, losing 4-2 to Port Allegany’s Miska Young, who broke a 2-2 tie on a takedown with 18 seconds left in the match.

Rowles (20-8) advanced in the blood round to earn his trip to the podium for Juniata. The Indian sophomore, down 5-0, stormed back to pin Philipsburg’s Hunter Kephart and earn a medal. He finished eighth after being pinned by United’s Colton Henning in 3:46.

Just missing the podium by losing in the blood round were Paxton Shawver (114), Colby Seiler (145), and Reese Christine (172) for the Huskies, A.J. Chilcote (127), Jacik Hess (133), and Haiden Inch (285) for the Trojans, and Harrison Mummah (189) and Kelton Bonnell (215) for the Indians.

Mifflin County finished third in the team standings with 146 points, just behind Reynolds (182) and Central Mountain (174). Mount Union placed 18th with 74 points, and Midd-West was one behind with 55.5 points. Juniata, who brought only seven wrestlers for varsity action, finished 30th with 42 points.
