LEWISTOWN — The Mifflin County softball team struggled at the plate Monday in their 8-1 loss to State College.
They only had two hits, which has been a pattern of late for the Huskies. “We are not hitting the ball,” Mifflin County coach Craig Weston said. “I think we have four hits, five hits in three games. That doesn’t cut it, you are not going to win many ball games with that.”
“A lot of it is just confidence too, kids believing they can do it. They have the ability to do it.”
On the other side of things, the Little Lions’ Gabby Harpster pitched a great game. She didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning. Piper Specht started for the Huskies, giving up seven runs on seven hits.
The fielding was a strength for Mifflin County, with shortstop Bailey Wyland making good plays. “B played a heck of a game, she made some nice plays and nice stops,” Weston said. “There are some mental things that might not show as errors, but there are things that we worked on and we definitely need to clean those up.”
State College took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and followed it with three more runs in the second. Four runs were scored over the next three innings to give the Little Lions a comfortable 8-0 lead.
Addisyn Velez walked with the bases loaded in the sixth inning to score the Huskies only run of the game before Mifflin County got shut down in the seventh.
“We are not going to quit, regardless of our record,” Weston said. “We are going to practice hard, and overall just have a good attitude. Come everyday one pitch at a time, one out at a time, one inning at a time.”
Mifflin County (1-9) will be at Altoona at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday.
