Strong start keys EJ past Juniata

MIFFLINTOWN — East Juniata came in and took care of business as the Tigers beat their cross-county rivals in Juniata, 6-0, in a Tri-Valley League boys soccer match on Monday.

“I thought in the first half there were a lot of good things the kids did. I thought we had some good sharp serves into the box,” Tigers coach Cory Fronk said. “Brady (Roe) got a couple of finishes that way. Owen (Dressler) was serving some balls that were quality into the box. I’m pleased that the boys were able to win and I’m pleased that they didn’t let any goals through.”

One of the big factors for the Tiger victory was Brady Roe who scored himself a hat trick for the evening. But when asked for comment, Roe gave a lot of the credit to teammate Owen Dressler for helping credit some of those chances.

“I didn’t really do much, the balls were just placed right in front of the goal and I just shot them and they went in,” Roe said. “Owen Dressler, he placed some very nice passes.”

Aden Fronk had a goal and two assists, Jake Brackbill had a goal and an assist and Sam Kopacki also had a goal in the game. In fact, every single goal that was scored in the game had an assist on it.

“That’s what we’re looking for, generally I don’t like to see a whole lot of individual dribbling,” Fronk said. “It’s necessary at times to create a scoring chance but if you can put combinations of passes together and then get a finish it’s better.”

The score was a repeat of the first meeting as East Juniata won over Juniata 6-0 back in September. Despite the similar score, Indians head coach Jared Byler saw a much different team this time around as opposed to the first meeting.

“Just the level of focus was different tonight, they were more keyed in, more focused, they were a lot more coachable this evening,” Byler said. “Halftime we made the changes that we needed to make. EJ is just well coached. They’re senior heavy and it shows out there and coach Fronk and coach Inch do a great job with their guys.”

“Couldn’t ask for any more out of those guys, they never quit, really proud of my guys,” Byler continued.

The Tigers used constant pressure on the Juniata offense and in the first half, the Indians were held without a shot on goal for the half while East Juniata had 10 shots. The Indians didn’t have a shot on goal in the second half with Juniata having two shots on goal for the whole game. East Juniata had compiled a total of 19 shots on goal for the whole match.

The Indians were led by sophomore goalkeeper Wyatt Dessin who collected 13 saves for the evening.

“I think it was pretty good,” Dessin said.

On Wednesday, East Juniata (14-3-1) hosts Millersburg and Juniata (8-8) hosts Greenwood.
