Academy reopens after asbestos scare
LEWISTOWN — The Mifflin County Academy of Science and Technology has re-opened, following an incident that occurred Friday, Aug. 29, which exposed the construction trades classroom to asbestos.
A news release from Mifflin County School District states that the asbestos was found when a chalkboard in the construction trades classroom was removed.
The release states that the classroom was sealed off and samples of the material — a mastic glue — thought to contain asbestos were taken and sent for testing. The report says the results came back, showing the material contained an 8% concentration
of asbestos.
The report says a certified inspection company established a plan for the testing. The school district stated that the mastic glue was removed using an oscillating power tool with a scraping blade.
A certified inspection company was again contacted to address concerns about asbestos potentially affecting air quality.
After extensive testing, asbestos was present on a filing cabinet adjacent to the mastic that was removed in the construction
trades classroom.
Further testing and abatement was conducted until samples consistently tested negative for asbestos.
