From staff reports
JOHNSTOWN — Five people from Mifflin County were arrested early Sunday morning during a suspected burglary in the city of Johnstown in Cambria County and four have been charged, according to the Johnstown Police Department.
Police said 22-year-old Kayla McCarty, 27-year-old Derrick McCarty, 24-year-old Corey McCarty, 52-year-old Robert McCarty, all of McVeytown and 25-year-old Sean Robertson, of Newton Hamilton, were apprehended after officers were dispatched to a reported burglary in progress at 4:19 a.m. Sunday at 249 Maple Ave. in Johnstown, a building that was formerly a warehouse for the second-hand clothing retailer Goodwill.
Police said when officers arrived, they were able to apprehend two of the suspects who had been hiding, but more were still in the building.
A police dog was called in to assist with the search, but the dog died after falling from the fourth floor through an unsecured elevator shaft, JPD’s K9 unit announced via a Facebook post. The dog, whose name was Titan, had been a K9 officer with JPD since 2014.
The remaining suspects were eventually taken into custody, police said.
According to online court records, Robertson, Derrick McCarty, Corey McCarty, Robert McCarty have each been charged with burglary, flight to avoid apprehension and possession of an instrument of crime. All are currently incarcerated in the Cambria County Prison, unable to post the $250,000 bail set for each.
The preliminary hearing for all four defendants is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Dec. 3 in Johnstown before Magisterial District Judge Michael J. Musulin.
No charges have yet been filed against Kayla McCarty, according to online court records.
