COVID death total tripled in past week

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to accelerate locally, but especially in Mifflin County.

Over the past week, Mifflin County’s official death toll attributed to the virus tripled and another 463 cases were reported, according to data released Monday by the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Mifflin County reported 15 new deaths over the past seven days, putting that total at 22. It stood at just seven a week ago. The 463 new cases puts Mifflin County’s total at 1,361 since the pandemic began in March.

The numbers continued to increase significantly elsewhere.

In Juniata County, there were 208 new cases over the past week, which escalated the to-date total by about 33%. So far, there have been 621 cases in Juniata County. Juniata County also reported three new deaths, pushing that total to 12.

Snyder County added 169 cases for a new total of 871. Two more deaths were reported in Snyder County, making its total 20.

In Huntingdon County, there were 203 new cases over the past week, for a new total of 1,575. Another 10 deaths were also reported. Huntingdon County has now had 47 COVID deaths.

In Perry County, another 102 cases were reported, making that total 591. One additional COVID death was added to Perry County’s total, which now stands at nine.
