Mifflin County Forever Farm receives $140K

Pa. farms receive nearly $6M

LEWISTOWN — A Mifflin County farm owned by Jeffrey A. and Melody A. Ranck was the recipient of state grant funds to protect against residential and commercial development.

According to a news release from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, the Bratton Township farm received $143,451 — with $90,785 coming from state funds and $52,666 from county funds. The farm contains 101 acres of land.

The grant includes $5.7 million to purchase developmental rights for 2,079 acres on 24 farms in 14 Pennsylvania counties. The joint investment between state and local government is aimed to ensure that high-quality land is available for farmers.

Also included in the grant were:

• A Perry County farm owned by Ann H. and Robert Leroy Miller’s 138-acre crop farm in Spring Township. The farm received $8,902 in state funding and $1 in county funding;

• An Adams County farm owned by David R. and Fabienne B. Gladfelter, trustees of the Gladfelter Family Irrevocable Trust. The 102-acre crop farm is located in Mount Pleasant Township. Also included in the grant was Trotalong LLC for a 132-acre crop farm in Conewago Township. The farm received $725,094 from state funds;

• Berks County farms received $742,506, with $708,458 from state and $34,048 from county for Robert and Cynthia Batdorf’s, 52-acre crop farm in Penn and Centre Townships; Marty and Sherry K. Buck, for a 49-acre crop farm in Maidencreek Township; Timothy M. and Cathy S. Hartranft and Cynthia L. Luckenbill for a 108-acre crop farm in Richmond and Maxatawny townships; Richard M. and Janet M. Schlegel for a 32-acre crop farm in Oley Township;

• Blair County farms received $497,966; with $352,966 from state and $145,000 from county for Biddle Family Partnership, 236-acre crop and livestock farm in Woodbury Township;

• Chester County farms received $196,159, with $15,509 from the state and $180,650 from county funds to Gaye A. Bergstrom’s, 20-acre equine farm, Upper Oxford and West Fallowfield Townships and Louise W. Hendriks’, 19-acre equine farm, East Marlborough Township

• Cumberland County farms received $187,147, with $4,640 from state resources and $182,507 county for Lillie A. and Daniel L. Foster, 103-acre crop and livestock farm, Lower Frankford Township;

• Dauphin County farms received $293,057, with $251,944 from state funds and $41,113 from county for Robert N. and Marian B. Miller, 88-acre crop farm, Upper Paxton Township and Timothy M. and Tammy Wentzel #3, 35-acre crop farm, Jefferson Township;

• Franklin County farms received $294,280, with $9,830 from state and $284,450 from county means for Daniel G. and Amy R. Hershberger, 113-acre crop & livestock farm, Peters Township;

• Lancaster County farms received $428,116 with $34,149 from state, $348,967 from county and $45,000 from Warwick Township to Gerhart Trust, 74-acre crop farm, Warwick Township and James N. and Sandra L. Sensenig #2, 39-acre crop and livestock farm, Fulton and Little Britain townships;

• Lebanon County received $909,031 with $514,528 from state and $394,503 from county to Harold K. Eisenhauer Jr. and Dawn L. Eisenhauer, 61-acre crop and livestock farm, Swatara Township; Kenneth L. and Carol A. Hebel, 74-acre crop and livestock farm, East Hanover Township; Mark D. and Sandra K. Meyer, 36-acre crop and livestock farm, North Londonderry Township; Timothy P. and Debra Jo Trayer, 183-acre crop farm, South Londonderry Township;

• Lehigh County received $569,346 with $414,602 from state, $5,000 from county and $149,744 from township for Patricia L. Stewart, 67-acre crop farm, North Whitehall Township;

• Westmoreland County received $303,338 from state means from George A. Boytim Jr. and Lisa M. Boytim, 75-acre equine farm, Mount Pleasant Township;

• York County received $411,778 from state means to Alan B. Bowersox and Belinda Tiner, Trustees of the Bowersox Family Trust #1, 133-acre crop farm, Heidelberg Township.

In recent years, Pennsylvania has invested more than $140 million to preserve 472 new farms and 39,273 prime acres of farmland across the state.
