HUNTINGDON -- Members of the Big Valley FFA chapter traveled to the Huntingdon County Fairgrounds on Sept. 25 to compete in the Fall Career Development Event.
This year, the Fall CDEs consisted of seven different events that the members of Mifflin County -- along with the Juniata and East Juniata FFA chapters from Juniata County and four schools from Huntingdon County -- could compete in.
The events that the members of these seven different FFA chapters could participate in were FFA knowledge, wildlife and forestry, milk quality and products, safe tractor driving, stockman's/livestock evaluation, floriculture/agronomy and vet science.
The eight members in attendance from the Big Valley FFA competed in livestock evaluation and vet science. "They did amazing and we are proud of them for representing our program and chapter so well," Big Valley FFA Advisor Nicolette Cusate said.
The four Big Valley FFA members who took part in the livestock evaluation all finished in the top 10. Lily Goss led the way with a fourth-place showing out of 35 competitors. Torri Maclay followed her in seventh, with Miley Kohler in eighth and Taylor Rhoades in 10th.
In vet science, Abbie Fitzgerald tied for third in a field of 18 competitors. Gio Rivera tied for 10th, while Chloe Fisher placed 13th and Noel Haines took 14th.
Additionally, Cusate said the Big Valley chapter was responsible for organizing and leading the area-wide community service project that occurs after students are done completing.
"This year, we packed hygiene kids for children to be donated to Mifflin County Children and Youth Services," Cusate explained.
Each chapter was instructed to bring items to assemble the kits, which included a pair of socks, toothbrush and toothpaste, body wash or body wipes, deodorant and shampoo.
"All together we were able to pack 32 kits to be donated with many extra spare toothbrushes and socks to be distributed individually," Cusate added. "Thank you to all the chapters that made our service project a success."
