Naval history: Loss of ‘Great Hope’ cruiser To the Editor: Few naval histories include the story of the loss of the cruiser “Great Hope,” the flagship of the navy of a remote island nation in the South Pacific; but, as the event contains important ideas about command and leadership, which are always of interest to historians, its story can profitably be told. Dear Editor The week of September 10-16, 2023 has been declared Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) Week in an effort to recognize and appreciate the work of Pennsylvania’s many DSPs who care for our friends, family, and neighbors with intellectual, development, physical, and other disabilities. DSPs assist those they support with hands-on activities of daily living. Many individuals are able to live meaningful lives in their community because of this assistance. Response to Spahr’s letter printed Aug 30th. To the Editor: Please, anyone, explain to me, what about “Russia” is a “hoax?” What does this word even mean to you people? Everything is a hoax. Apparently the only thing that is real is what the dear leader tells you is true. For God’s sake, you can look at a map with a Sharpie circle drawn on it and think, “see, see, the orange man was right.” And you think it is the conservatives that have common sense. Thanks To the Editor: Thank you for providing this forum to express appreciation. On Saturday, Aug. 26, the Juniata County Food Pantry concluded the 11th year of providing our Summer Backpack Program to the Juniata County community. Having registered 172 students for the program, we have completed our most successful year in the recent past. While food insecurity remains an issue at the local, state, and national levels, our local mission is to meet the needs of as many students and their families as possible. State Income Taxes To the Editor: Thanks to David Rowe, state representative for the 85th District, and his legislative aide, Angela Goodwin. The state income tax information presented here is accurate and up to date. If you are a wealthy person with a $1 million taxable income and you don’t like paying taxes, where would you choose to live? You could choose Alaska (where the government shares oil revenue with taxpayers,) Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas or Wyoming because those states do NOT have a state income tax. Play ball To the Editor: Recently on the playground there was the strangest development. All the kids that were left-handed were congregated on one side near the dugout, and all the right-handed kids were on the opposite side of the playground near the other dugout. It was a near 50/50 mix. A teacher walked to the pitcher’s mound, looked both ways and asked what was going on? JB, the oldest left-hander, said they wanted to play a game but could not agree on the rules of this pick up game. The teacher said they should be the same as a regular game.
