LEWISTOWN — Mifflin County (11-11) welcomed in their cross-mountain rivals in State College (14-7) for a primetime matchup on Teacher Appreciation and Mini-Thon night. The Little Lions beat the Huskies 54-43.

Mifflin County got out to a fast start by scoring the first four points but the game would see its highs and lows where both teams suffered the turnover bug early.

State College was led by the star sisters Sienna Wilson and Sheree Wilson combining for 44 points in a game where both put together 22-point performances

State College head coach Alli Mock said, “We’ve been doing this with the girls all season so this game and the 16 other games don’t change our approach… we need to take care of the ball and put our best display of basketball and do it for four quarters so at halftime it was a little bit of that and resetting ourselves and now fix it and show what we can do well.”

Mifflin County got production from junior guard Payton Weaver as all of her points came from deep, putting together a four-triple performance. Mifflin County’s Leah Reed was strong in the paint and was involved early totaling six on the night. Jayda Kanagy had nine points in a strong fourth quarter.

State’s Sienna Wilson said, “Being able to just come out and display myself as a player and do it as a team is a big part of my game along with just knowing that my teammates trust in me to help them put points on the board means everything. So, really it’s a team thing.”

Mifflin County’s turnovers proved costly as they coughed the ball up 17 times where the Lady Lions turned a lot of those turnovers into points in the second half despite a late push from the Huskies.

Huskies coach Crystal Weaver said, “We just have to continue to make adjustments especially defensively, especially on the Wilson twins. They are just phenomenal athletes. They can do everything, shoot, rebound. So,we have to find a way to get stops and get the ball out of their hands and make others do something. Yeah, getting Leah Reed involved more and getting boards inside will definitely help us.”

The Lady Huskies face the Lions on Monday at 7 p.m. in the district playoffs.

The JV Huskies beat State, 43-39. Lily Curry posted 11 points and Gracie Kerstetter added 10.
