Juniata, Mount Union grind through Day 1 of D6 wrestling tourney

ALTOONA — Day 1 of the District 6 Class 2A wrestling tournament has a way of sorting things out.

By the time the mats quieted Friday night in Altoona, championship and consolation rounds were complete, and brackets were thinner. For wrestlers from Juniata and Mount Union, the opening day delivered quick pins, long consolation runs, and a growing list of bouts that would decide seasons on Saturday.

Juniata opened at 133 pounds when Anthony Maradiaga pinned Mount Union’s Chase Clark in 24 seconds during the championship first round. Maradiaga was pinned by Central Cambria’s Hadyn Strittmatter in 1:57 in the second round, then moved into the consolation bracket. He pinned Sean McFarland of Bellwood-Antis in 1:54 in consolation round two and followed with a pin of Drake Taylor of West Branch in 2:09 in consolation round three to reach the blood round.

Mount Union’s Chase Clark dropped into the consolations at 133 and was eliminated when Glendale’s Tanner Ammerman won by technical fall, 17-0, in 3:29 during consolation round two.

At 172, Juniata’s Logan Troyer pinned Dominic Pluebell of Tyrone in 1:44 in the championship first round. Troyer was pinned by Bishop McCort’s Emory Gunby in 1:42 in the second round, then answered back in the consolations by pinning Michael Watt of Penn Cambria in 4:18. He closed the night with a technical fall over Ryan Galinis of Cambria Heights, 16-1, in 3:27 during consolation round three to advance to the blood round.

Ryder Smith provided Juniata’s lone semifinalist at 152. Smith pinned Sam Mardula of Penn Cambria in 2:38 in the championship second round, then won by technical fall over Mount Union’s Jacik Hess, 15-0, in 4:00 in the quarterfinals.

At 145, Ty Fahnestock pinned Harrison Snyder of Cambria Heights in 3:10 during the second round before falling by technical fall to Bishop McCort’s Bo Bassett, 17-2, in 50 seconds in the quarterfinals. Fahnestock dropped into the consolation bracket and finished the day in the blood round.

Colten Rowles competed at 160 for Juniata. Rowles lost by technical fall to United’s Connor Riffer, 16-1, in 3:27 in the championship second round. He rebounded with a major decision over Finn McGee of Southern Huntingdon, 24-11, in consolation round three to stay alive.

At heavyweight, Kelton Bonnell pinned Cayden Grager of Bellwood-Antis in 47 seconds in the second round. Bonnell later dropped a 4-1 decision to Bald Eagle Area’s Gage Gardner in the quarterfinals and advanced into the blood round through the consolation bracket.

Juniata’s Derrick Aurand was eliminated at 189. He was pinned by Southern Huntingdon’s Jesse McGahan in 4:47 during the championship first round and later pinned by Mount Union’s Henry Petron in 3:18 in consolation round two.

Mount Union had several wrestlers reach Saturday’s qualifying rounds. At 121, Kamden Beatty pinned Ty Sheffield of Huntingdon in 1:47 in the championship second round before falling by technical fall to Philipsburg-Osceola’s Caleb Hummel, 19-3, in 3:54 in the quarterfinals. Beatty finished the night in the blood round.

Mount Union’s Jacob Morgan was eliminated at 127. He was pinned by Juniata Valley’s Joshua Muckle in 2:56 during the championship first round and later pinned by Southern Huntingdon’s Ryker Snair in 2:04 in consolation round two.

Jacik Hess opened strong at 152, winning by technical fall over Logan Clark of Moshannon Valley, 15-0, in 3:08 in the second round. Hess was then defeated by Ryder Smith in the quarterfinals and moved into the blood round.

At 172, Rowan McClain-Hartman won by technical fall over Chase Tresnicky of Richland, 19-4, in 2:54 during the second round. He was edged 9-7 by Penns Valley’s Brayden Lisowski in the quarterfinals and dropped into the blood round.

Daniel Hartman wrestled at 160 for Mount Union. He was pinned by Glendale’s Landon Zendeck in 4:36 in the championship first round and later pinned by Central’s Jeremiah Hart in 1:26 in consolation round two, ending his tournament.

At 189, Henry Petron was pinned by Huntingdon’s Dom Peruso in 3:01 in the championship second round. Petron responded by pinning Juniata’s Derrick Aurand in 3:18 in consolation round two before being pinned by United’s Jacob McConville in 2:09 in consolation round three.

Mount Union’s lone semifinalist came at 215, where Andrew Ryan won by technical fall over James Taylor of Southern Huntingdon, 17-2, in 1:14 in the second round and then pinned Connor Ward of Westmont Hilltop in 2:56 in the quarterfinals.

In the team standings after day one, Bishop McCort led the field with 143 points, followed by Penns Valley with 104.5 and Huntingdon with 96. Juniata stood 11th with 47 points, while Mount Union was 22nd with 32.5 as wrestling resumes Saturday with semifinal and blood round bouts determining district qualifiers.
