Lions edge Huskies in sudden death
CAMP HILL — Mifflin County field hockey traveled to Camp Hill for the Labor Day weekend tournament. It consisted of two games, one versus New Oxford and one championship game against Camp Hill.
During the first game, the Huskies defeated New Oxford and successfully found the back of the cage three times. Jayda Kanagy scored the first goal on a ball from Bailey Neff to take the lead with five minutes left in the first quarter. The second goal was scored by Brynn Rowe as a rebound from the goalie during the second quarter. The final goal was scored by Bailey Neff on a pass from Jayda Kanagy as the pair made another connection to secure the final goal. Paige Snyder was 4-0 for shutouts on the season. The Huskies had 19 shots on goal and nine offensive penalty corners.
During the championship game against Camp Hill, the Huskies dominated the Lions in every category. The Huskies fought through three green cards and calls against them and still played consistent hockey. The Huskies had several opportunities to score during 15 penalty corners, as well as 21 shots on goal, but were unable to secure a ball in the cage. On the Huskies defensive side, Aubree Dobson refused to let the Lions score and had three defense saves to get her team out of trouble. After the regular game, the final score was 0-0.
The Lions went straight to shootouts to determine a winner of the tournament. After five shootouts for each team, the Huskies and Lions both scored two goals. This led to sudden death after a winner wasn’t found. During sudden death the Huskies fell short and the Lions won 1-0.

Huskies have a ball at Big Spring
NEWVILLE — Mifflin County boys soccer topped West Perry on Saturday, 3-0, and then beat Brandywine Heights in the championship match, 3-2.
Mifflin County assistant coach Todd Peters discussed the win versus West Perry.
“We got on the board with a spot-on early cross by Mason Allen to Kayden Hook to finish 9:39 into the match. Then, halfway into the first half, RJ Miller played a perfectly weighted through ball to Zach Keller to find the back of the net. With ten minutes left in the first half, Bruce Baker served a great corner kick to Brody Wolfkill’s head to hammer home the third. Our boys withstood many arms and shoulders through their backs and maintained cool heads as this game progressed and played our game with some great team defense to maintain a shutout,” Peters said.
MC led 15-5 in shots and both teams were tied in corners at 2. Perry led in saves, 12-5.
Against Brandywine Heights, the Huskies led in saves, 11-6. The Bullets led in shots, 11-9, and in corners, 5-2.
“This game was a hard-fought match for both teams and a good one to be a part of for both sides. It lived up to championship match hype. We did manage to get on the board early with a nice ball from Chase Retherford finding Zach Keller. Dylan Liggett got himself in the right spot off a deflection and finished a one-on-one against the keeper for number two. The midfield game was quite a battle during this one with Bryson Wagner, RJ Miller, Bruce Baker and Jace Bagrosky all with key minutes and stops in this match but also during the first. We caught ourselves getting tired and getting away from our kind of soccer in the last five minutes of the half and that let them score a direct kick and one we didn’t clear,” Peters noted.
“We knew it was going to take some adapting of our gameplan in the second half as we did have them tired in some spots. Brody Wolfkill and Callen Harman kept us organized for the defensive strength we needed. It was end-to-end action with key subs being the difference as a shot was saved and Mason Allen put away the rebound with eight minutes to go. The boys played smart to end the match and bring home the championship trophy.
It was a total team smart effort today with what we needed for team offense and defense. Our boys took what we worked on at practice and made it happen and for that we are happy to see and feel. It’s nice to bring a trophy back to Mifflin County knowing your hard work is paying off. With a team record of 3-1 we are still prepared to continue working hard for our next opponents.”
