Huskies’ Smith still shows blazing speed

Young speedster switched from baseball to track

CHAMBERSBURG — In Carter Smith’s first athletic life, he was running down fly balls in the outfield for the Reedsville Babe Ruth team and using his speed to score runs.

In his second athletic life, he is running for the Mifflin County High School track and field team.

And he runs a lot.

“I’m now running five to six days a week,” Carter Smith said, “I’m putting in 20 to 25 miles a week.”

On Saturday, Smith had an outstanding day at the Mid-Penn Conference Track and Field Championships as he helped Mifflin County place in two relays and he also won the 1,600-meter run.

But, for the sophomore, winning has become routine. In the winter, he took home the top state honor in the half mile in the indoor season and then took part in a national meet in Boston, where he finished 14th.

After the spring season is over, he plans to expand his ability to a longer distance.

“I’m thinking about going out for cross country in the fall.” If he can handle the longer distance (3.1 miles), there is one thing for sure, he always seems to have enough left to have a good finish.

As for his former life in baseball, Smith said, “Well, I don’t have to worry about batting averages anymore.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
