Indians split with Tigers

MIFFLINTOWN — On Wednesday, the Juniata-East Juniata rivalry transferred over to the track and field side as the Tigers traveled to the Indians to battle in Tri-Valley League action. The two ended in a split on the night.
In boys action, the Indians, behind three individual wins by Jasper Shepps, defeated the Tigers 96-54. The Lady Tigers topped the Lady Indians in a tight 83-63 contest.
“I think they all did well, especially the boys. They all ran tough and had a good day. We had good jumps and good throws, and just overall a good day,” said Juniata coach Shari Miller. “A lot of them play other sports together and stuff, a lot of them know each other, so it’s good competition.”
Shepps started his night with a win in the 110-meter hurdles (16.3). He followed up with a first place nod in the 300-meter hurdles (43.5) and capped his day with a win in the field taking the high jump at 6′ 2″.
Teammate Alexander Armstrong finished his day taking two first place wins. His first was in the long jump (19’1″) and then in the triple jump (40’1″).
The night was a very successful one for the boys as numerous athletes finished with multiple wins. The last one was David Mayall-Marker. Marker took home wins in the 1600-meter run (5:15.1) and in the 3200-meter dash (13:10.1).
East Juniata’s Stoy Smith also had an impressive showing finishing tops in two events of his own. He notched first in the 100-meter run (12.2), the 200-meter dash (27.4).
Teammate Wrett Smith day with a win in field competition posting a top spot of 95’10” in the javelin.
East Juniata’s Jonah Hess won the 400-meter with a time of 1:00.9.
Juniata’s Anthony Maradiaga captured the pole vault with a leap of 10′.
East Juniata captured the shot put as Shay Brininger launched a top throw of 43’5″.
Rounding out the boys side of the competition was the Indians’ Conrad Long who threw a top throw of 131’5″ in the javelin.
In the boys’ relays, Juniata took the 4×800-meters (9:54.2) and 4×100 (51.7).
East Juniata took the final event of the night, the 4×400-meter relay (4:15.9).
“The kids are all friends. For the most part, you know, so it’s always just a good time, and everybody pushes each other real hard. It was a good night, too, for PRs as well. We had a lot. A lot of younger ones stepped up,” Miller added.
On the girls’ side, East Juniata runner Briahna Brubaker shined as she led all winners as she brought home four individual wins as well. She topped out in the 100-hurdles (18.8), the 300-hurdles (56.5), long jump (15’0 1/2″) and triple jump (30′ 11 1/4″).
Juniata’s Carolyn Heidenreich also lit up the night with four first place finishes of her own. Heidenreich took the first place finishes in the 1600-meter run, the 800 (2:59.5), 3200-meter (14:43.4) and high jump (4’4″).
East Juniata’s Riley Apple rounded out the multiple winners as she finished with two top finishes for her afternoon. Apple brought home a win in the 200-meter (32.6) and the 400 -meter (1:18.0).
Cali Wagner took home the win in the 100-meter for the Tigers finishing with a time of 14.50.
Juniata’s Selena Mayall-Marker added points to her teams page by winning the pole vault with a top jump of 6’0″.
EJ’s Addison Eby captured the win in the shotput with a top toss of 28’2 3/9″.
The Tigers also took the discus thanks to Adelie Fisher who threw a top throw of 75′ 3″.
Rounding out the day for the girls competition was Juniata’s Aubryn Deihl as she picked up the win in the javelin with a throw of 83′.
The Lady Tigers took two-of-three in the relays. East Juniata opened the night with a win in the 4×800 (13:34.3) and in the 4×100 (58.7).
Juniata’s lone relay win came in the 4×400 (5:10.0).
