Why the Nevada state treasurer race matters

It's challenging enough to pay attention to political races in our home states, much less those in other states. But recent headlines make clear that it's more important than ever that the klieg lights shine on these offices, and that those who occupy them face national as well as regional scrutiny. Remember Tiffany Henyard, the self-proclaimed Democrat "super mayor" of tiny Dolton, Illinois? Her unaccounted-for spending was so bad that the village brought in former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot to investigate; Lightfoot's work revealed that the village of Dolton went from having a ...

Stay calm, vigilant when dealing with scammers

Decent people are assaulted regularly by scammers attempting to gain their personal information, their money, and usually, both. A new round of scam attempts has taken things up a notch by including state seals. Law abiding citizens are used to being able to believe that if something comes with that kind of official imagery, they should pay attention. And because they ARE the kinds of people who want to do the right thing, they are more likely to fall for attempts by those who would prey on their sense of responsibility by using state seals, bank logos and whatever else they can think of ...

Nursing home residents at homeless shelters reflect housing crisis

Public officials well aware of Ohio’s problems with a shortage of accessible, affordable housing might not be aware of a growing problem related to that challenge. Eastland Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Columbus caught ...

History — including baseball’s history — teaches lessons

Another example, of course, is our region’s historic ties to America’s pastime, baseball. In Wednesday’s edition, we featured the history of Bowman Field, and reported on successful efforts by state Rep. Jamie Flick, R-South Williamsport, to recognize the Negro ...

Nationwide, the latest federal behavioral survey estimates that more than 1 in 5 U.S. adults experienced mental illness in the past year, and about 1 in 6 people ages 12 and older met the criteria for a substance use disorder. That’s tens of millions of people and ...

Ukraine’s war cannot be just Europe’s war

An article in the April 25-26 edition of the Wall Street Journal began with the headline “The Ukraine War is Europe’s war now.” “With Russia determined to continue its four-year invasion until it dominates its neighbor, and President Trump pulling back from Europe and focused on the Middle East,” the article said, “Ukraine finds itself reliant on the traditionally wary EU (European Union) in its war for survival.” Although some nations and their people see beefed-up EU political and financial support as confirming the main premise of the April article, especially the ...
