A true prophet will point others to Christ, not himself

Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonors his head. I Corinthians 11:4 In the last article we saw how the Old Testament prophet, the prophet in the early church and the modern-day prophet, are connected by this one thread. They all had (have) the task of accurately presenting God’s message to His people. Their role is not limited to that, but will always include the exposition (presentation) of God’s Word. There are many false prophets in the world today, so exactly how can we distinguish between them? In the last article we said, if the prediction of a ...

Quit acting like children!

Someone once gave this definition of a baby “A baby is a small member of the home that makes love stronger, days shorter, nights longer, the bank roll smaller, the home happier, clothes shabbier, the past forgotten and the future worth living for.” I believe we can all agree today on two things: we all love babies and babies change lives. In John 3, Jesus had a conversation with a man by the name of Nicodemus. In that narrative Jesus told Nicodemus that in order for one to go to heaven, they must be born the second time, to become a baby again, to start over, to begin anew, to ...

The prophet delivers the word of God

Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonors his head. I Corinthians 11:4 Beginning in the Old Testament, we want to take a brief look at the prophet and prophesying. We are mostly going to focus on the true prophet who prophesied to God’s people. There have always been false prophets who have given messages that weren’t true. “If a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him,” Deuteronomy ...

I only need to be faithful in the Lord

Good morning, dear friends! This morning, sitting here on the mountain, watching deer outside fighting one another, I’m seeing some good life lessons for myself. Maybe for you, too. It’s amazing to me to watch deer stand on their hind legs and strike out at one another. It seems bizarre. We think of deer as meek animals, intimidated by just about everything. I’ve been here long enough now to know that this is just not the case. As a matter of fact, if I were to go outside right now, there’s that one who will stand his ground. He is not the least bit intimidated by me. He will ...

Who are they, and where did they come from?

As Christian and Hope draw near to the river of death two shining figures appear. Their raiment shine like gold, their faces as the light. These glorious figures lead the two men as they emerge from the river of death into the Celestial city. They’re not angels. They’re God’s servants shining in the world of darkness and sin. That’s who you and I are to be, according to John Bunyan in his classic work, The Pilgrim’s Progress, God’s servants, shining lights, helping wanderers to find their way home. What a beautiful portrayal of God’s servants we also find in Revelation. ...
