Be thankful all year round

Only about five more days and most of us will be sitting at that Thanksgiving table with family and friends enjoying turkey and all that goes with that meal. I’d mention my favorite food items for Thanksgiving but then we’d all get very hungry now. Thank you to all of the mothers and grandmothers who in most cases do most of the work for this annual meal. We are like many of you, who also have family coming from far away, such as our daughters, their husbands and yes, those wonderful grandchildren from Virginia and Tennessee and locally too, that we don’t get to see nearly ...

We must understand God to obey His commands

Birthdays, graduations, weddings can be a lot of fun. Who doesn’t like to party, even if it’s for no reason at all. In fact, just look at some of the strange festivals people celebrate. According to the book Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, the citizens of Monte Rio, California, hold a yearly festival in honor of the “spring invasion of the banana slug.” Residents of Pasadena, California, hold a yearly Doo Dah Parade, which showcases a “garbage can drum corps.” The people of Myerstown, Pennsylvania hold a celebration every Oct. 24 in honor of Bald Head Day. Place your lives and plans into the hands of God

Good morning, dear sisters. What a beautiful morning, finally. I know we should be so thankful for so much rain, but honestly, Lord, what are you thinking here? What a silly thing to say to the God of all the earth, isn’t it? His ways are always best...even when we cannot see. Many of you reading today are wondering why...Why, Lord? Why have You allowed these things in my life? Why now, Lord? Why me, Lord? Why not her? We are so this way, aren’t we? We have our own agendas, and when the Lord allows other things to enter in, if we’re honest, we aren’t always thrilled to death ...

Does God speak to people today?

There were two doctrines that spawned the Reformation and today stand as the principles of the Christian faith. One is ‘sola fide; meaning by faith alone and ‘sola scriptura’ meaning by scripture alone. It is the idea that only the Bible has the authority to bind the consciousness of believers and we should recognize no other authority including church offices, civil magistrates, and church creeds and confessions. Only the Bible is inspired and claims infallibility, that it is impossible to be in error. The Bible is also inerrant. Infallibility says the Bible cannot err and errant ...

Ancient manuscript gives glimpse of early Christianity

An important piece of early Christian history, the Crosby-Schøyen Codex, is up for auction at Christie’s in London. This codex is a mid-fourth century book from Egypt containing a combination of biblical and other early Christian texts. The Crosby-Schøyen Codex was discovered alongside more than 20 other codices near Dishna, Egypt, in 1952. These manuscripts are collectively known as “the Dishna Papers” or “the Bodmer Papyri,” after the Swiss collector Martin Bodmer. Though often overshadowed by other 20th century discoveries, this trove of ancient manuscripts represents ...
