Wayne Township woman charged in death of newborn
Police allege infant was abandoned in field after being born alive
McVEYTOWN — A 20-year-old McVeytown woman is facing multiple felony charges, including criminal homicide, after state police allege she abandoned her newborn child outside a Wayne Township residence earlier this month.
Jordyn Lynn Kauffman was charged Tuesday with first-degree murder, aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of children, concealment of the death of a child, recklessly endangering another person and abuse of a corpse, according to court documents.
Pennsylvania State Police at Lewistown said officers were dispatched May 15 to a residence along Mount Hope Road in Wayne Township after Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital contacted Mifflin County 911 regarding a report involving a baby.
According to the criminal affidavit, emergency responders later located the deceased infant in the grass outside the residence. Police said Kauffman allegedly told hospital staff she had given birth earlier that day at her home and placed the baby in a garbage bag before leaving the infant in a field.
Court documents state Kauffman allegedly admitted the baby was moving after birth and remained alive when placed outside. According to the affidavit, Kauffman told investigators she held the baby for approximately 30 minutes before placing the infant on the ground in a field outside the residence. Police said she later went to work at the Dollar General after leaving the infant in the field.
Investigators reported finding blood inside the residence, along with what appeared to be the placenta and umbilical cord near the scene. An autopsy conducted May 16 at Mount Nittany Medical Center concluded the infant had been born alive, according to the affidavit.
The affidavit also states hospital personnel had attempted to contact Kauffman regarding missed pregnancy-related appointments and a scheduled induction. According to investigators, Kauffman allegedly told police she concealed the pregnancy because she feared her father would disown her and force her to leave the home if he learned she was pregnant. Court documents state Kauffman told investigators she attempted to hide the pregnancy and considered terminating it, but did not do so because she felt it was too late.
According to the docket, Kauffman was arraigned Wednesday before Magisterial District Judge Kent A. Smith. Bail was denied due to the homicide charge, and she is being held in Mifflin County Correctional Facility.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. May 27 before Smith.
