Plenty of patriotic pastimes on holiday weekend slate
LEWISTOWN – Memorial Day is here – the official start of summer. So dig out your favorite red, white and blue duds and start celebrating.
There are plenty of patriotic pastimes this weekend to help you get in the spirit of America’s semi sesquicentennial. (I had enough trouble spelling it, let alone pronouncing it.)
At any rate, here’s a glance at what’s going on in the Juniata Valley:
Outdoor activities at Greenwood Furnace
Memorial Day weekend features demonstrations at the Greenwood Furnace State Park Blacksmith Shop from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. Stop by to learn about the art and history of early American blacksmithing with park volunteer, Don Maurer. Meet at the Blacksmith Shop.
A wildflower walk will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Join Bill Monaco, a retired school teacher with more than 50 years of experience in wildflower photography, for a presentation on wildflowers followed by a guided walk.
On Sunday, Whipple Dam in Petersburg will hold Family Fishing at 10 a.m. Join a park naturalist for a morning of fishing. Poles and bait provided. No fishing license is required during this program. Meet at the fishing pier.
Monday’s Historical Walking Tour will cap the holiday weekend at 10:30 a.m. Join a Park Naturalist for a walk through the historic district. Learn about the village that dominated the area for 70 years. Meet at the Blacksmith Shop. All programs at Greenwood Furnace State Park are free and open to the public.
