LEWISTOWN — Mifflin County has been awarded nearly $1.5 million through a PennDOT transportation program to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety along the Electric Avenue and South Logan Boulevard corridor.

The Mifflin County Board of Commissioners announced the county received a $1,489,740 Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside grant through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

The project will include construction of 6-foot-wide bike lanes and 5-foot-wide concrete sidewalks extending from Ort Valley Road to Derry Park Drive.

According to county officials, the project will also include ADA-compliant ramps at business entrances and intersections to improve accessibility for residents and visitors.

Officials said the improvements are intended to create safer travel routes for pedestrians and bicyclists while improving connections between neighborhoods, schools, businesses and recreational areas throughout the corridor.

Commissioner Rob Postal said the county views the project as an investment in public safety and quality of life.

“We are grateful to PennDOT for recognizing the importance of this corridor and helping make these long-needed improvements possible,” Postal said in a statement.

Commissioner Kevin Kodish said the project is also expected to strengthen community connectivity and support local economic activity by improving access between neighborhoods and commercial areas.

“This is the kind of forward-thinking investment that positions Mifflin County for the future,” Kodish said.

Commissioner Noah Wise said the project will provide more clearly defined spaces for pedestrians and cyclists traveling through the area.

County officials said additional project details and construction timelines will be released at a later date.

Starting at $2.99/week.
