ALTOONA — The District 6 Track and Field Championships started on Tuesday at Mansion Park in Altoona. There are three area teams that we are watching looking to advance to the PIAA Championships in Shippensburg. The Mifflin County Huskies had a good day advancing athletes to the state tournament and today they will continue to compete to get players qualified along with the Trojans of Mount Union and the Indians of Juniata High School, both from the 2A ranks.
The Huskies’ Carter Smith ran the top performance of the day setting a new record of 4:05.68 for a first-place finish in the 1600-meter run. Wyatt Kauffman placed third in the same event and will be heading to Shippensburg. Aiden Scavitti joined Carter and Kauffman on the podium for a seventh-place finish. Libby Cook placed eighth in the 1600-meter trials with a time of 5:28.17. Taylor Kenepp ran a school record time of 58.66 in the 400-meter dash. Jovie Kauffman also qualified for finals in the 400m run.
Five Huskies will compete in the 3A finals today with Kenepp running the 400-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Landon Yetter will run in the 300-meter hurdles and Winston Yetter will run the 400-meter dash along with Trevan Diven. Nevin Farley will compete in the 200-meter dash finals.
“The kids did very well today,” commented Juniata coach Shari Miller. “We had lots of personal best times, and broke school records.”
Indian Jasper Shepps won the high jump event and broke his own school records which also broke the meet record. He jumped 6-10.25. He will be in the finals tomorrow in both the110 and 300 hurdles. Anthony Maradiaga placed fifth in the pole vault event with a personal best of 13′. Alex Armstrong had a sixth-place finish in the high jump with a jump of 5-11. David Mayall-Marker had a personal best of 4:58.49 in the 1600-meter run and John Hardin ran 5:02.40. Sylvia Brubaker placed fourth in the long jump with a personal best of 16-8 and broke a 1990 school record. Carolyn Heidenreich matched her personal best in the high jump at 4-8. She ran a season best 1600-meter run at 56:54.97. Emme Freed and Willow Aurand both had personal best times in the 300 hurdles with Freed having a time of 51.80 and Aurand had a time of 54.15. The girls 4x 100 really had a personal best time of 48.84. “This was one of the best days weather wise that we have had this season,” added Miller. “All the kids competed with heart and determination. We will see how we do Wednesday with the weather changing. We are not expecting the best conditions.”

The young Trojans team also had some personal-best time on Tuesday. Rowan Hartman placed sixth in the discus throwing event with a personal best of 138-02. Lily House ran in four events and turned in good times. House had a 13.67 in the 100-meter dash and a 27.94 in the 200-meter dash for a personal best in the event. Ty’jier Hooper had two personal bests today with a 23.99 in the 100-meter dash and a 23.99 in the 200-meter dash. “The athletes did well overall,” commented Trojans head coach Casey Hanlon. “We had personal best performances today. You cannot ask for anything more than that. The team did well and we will see what we can do Wednesday.
The events will conclude today at 4 p.m. at Mansion Park.
