Lumina Center faces urgent repairs before summer

Bathroom renovations needed to keep Rainbow Summer program on track

BURNHAM — Facing urgent building repairs that could impact summer programming, the LUMINA Center in Lewistown sought support from the Rotary Club of Lewistown and the broader community.

Sherrie Bickertt, executive director of the Lumina Center, recently approached the civic organization for guidance and potential assistance as the nonprofit works through a series of unexpected facility issues.

The Lumina Center’s challenges began with a burst water pipe, which led to the discovery of additional problems requiring attention. Since then, Bickertt, a team of volunteers and ServiceMaster Restore have been working to address the issues.

The center, which relies entirely on community donations, provides programs for children throughout the year. It offers activities on Mifflin County Act 80 days — when school is not in session — as well as its summer program, Rainbow Summer.

However, the summer program is at risk due to ongoing bathroom and chapel renovation needs.

“Rotary invited Lumina to come share our current needs so the Rotary Club could decide how best they can support those needs to help ensure the continuation of programming while we take care of urgent building renovations,” Bickertt said following the meeting.

“In order to ensure Rainbow Summer programming is not negatively impacted in any way, we need to complete the downstairs bathroom and chapel renovations before summer programming starts, and the Rotary Club is considering how they can best support this need,” she added.

Rainbow Summer is scheduled to begin June 15, making timely completion of the repairs critical.

In addition to renovation funding, the center is seeking community donations to support daily program needs. The program runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and provides children with meals, drinks, crafts and a trip to a local pool. Donations of snacks, drink pouches and similar items are needed.

Bickertt also noted that Reedsville Creamery is offering a “pay it forward” initiative throughout April at its Reedsville and Belleville locations to benefit the center.

More information, including a GoFundMe link and child sponsorship opportunities, is available on the LUMINA Center’s Facebook page. A $200 donation covers two weeks of camp for one child.

Starting at $2.99/week.
