Juniata County Commissioners hear updates

MIFFLINTOWN — Juniata County Commissioners heard updates from Penn State Extension and the Juniata County Library in addition to other business on Tuesday.

Sonya Nace, a Penn State Extension educator, shared details about the upcoming Juniata County Ag Safety Day, which Penn State Extension will host Saturday, April 25.

The ag safety event will run from 9 a.m. to noon in the commercial building at the Port Royal Fairgrounds and will feature various agricultural safety demonstrations.

Penn State Extension will offer hands-on experience in conjunction with other organizations and partners.

Friendship Fire Co. No. 1 will perform a real-time rescue demonstration.

Nace explained that some of the demonstrations include chainsaw, tractor, and grain bin safety, as well as safe aid.

Vince Giordano, librarian and director of the Juniata County Library, also updated Juniata County Commissioners during their meeting on just how impactful it is to still have a library in the community.

Giordano stated that although Juniata County has a population of more than 20,000, 42,000 people visited the library in the last year.

He added that the library conducted 136 programs for all ages, which were attended by 1,200 people.

Giordano said, “Although most people assume books are not being checked out anymore, 48,000 physical books and movies were checked out and only 12,000 items digitally.”

According to Giordano, the library accepts requests and can track them; it has taken in 139 requested items that were checked out 3,000 times in total.

The library has issued 8,000 library cards with 563 new cardholders in the last year.

Giordano said that the library also offers mobile hotspots for rent.

Fifty hotspots are available, and they were checked out 367 times, bringing in $13,000 to the library.

Commissioners also:

• Approved the December 2025 departmental reports including the first quarter report submitted by the UPI Office, the first quarter report submitted by the tax claim office, the monthly report submitted by the Juniata County sheriff’s office and the change of assessment report submitted by the tax assessment office;

• Approved the resignation of Shawn Kepner from his position as assistant maintenance director, effective as of the end of business on April 3;

• Approved the tax exonerations for Fayette, Monroe, Milford and Greenwood Townships.

Starting at $2.99/week.
