Applications open for America250 parade

Visitors Bureau outlines other planned events

From staff reports

LEWISTOWN — Applications are now being accepted for the Mifflin County America250 Parade, as local organizers continue planning a series of events leading up to the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration.

The parade is scheduled for July 18 and will be hosted by the Allensville Volunteer Fire Company. It will feature floats, community groups, fire apparatus and other entries. Those interested in participating can request an application by emailing allensvillevfc25@gmail.com or calling (717) 247-6754.

Additional America250-related programming continues into May, including the Kishacoquillas Valley Historical Society’s annual meeting on May 4 at the Union Township Building in Belleville. The event begins at 7 p.m. and will feature “Songs and Stories of the American Revolution” performed by Matthew Dodd. No tickets are required.

The Juniata River Valley Visitors Bureau is encouraging local organizations and event planners to submit America250-themed events for inclusion on its regional calendar. Approved events will be promoted to help highlight community participation in the nationwide commemoration. Submissions can be made by calling (717) 248-6713 or emailing info@jrvvisitors.com.

Organizers are also promoting a Celebrating America250 Art Show planned for this summer at East End Coffee Co., where artists are invited to submit original, non-political works focused on themes of liberty and freedom. For more information on the show, call (717) 348-5789.

Additional activities include merchandise sales and downloadable items through GetGoosed.Store, including themed memorabilia and a “Flat Goose Washington” initiative inspired by the Flat Stanley concept. Participants are encouraged to share photos of the character visiting landmarks using #GooseWashington.

On April 19, Miller Cinemas 6 will host a $5 screening of the film “Glory,” with an introduction highlighting local connections to the African American Memorial Cemetery. Proceeds will benefit the Mifflin County Historical Society.

Organizers say the series of events is intended to encourage broad community participation as planning continues for America’s 250th anniversary in 2026.

Starting at $2.99/week.
