District sells parcel near former school
MIFFLINTOWN — The Juniata County School District has approved the sale of a small parcel of land near the former Mountain View Elementary School to the Mifflintown Municipal Authority for $7,500.
The school board took action on the sale during its Feb. 19 meeting at the administration building in Mifflintown. The item appeared on the agenda and passed without discussion from board members before the vote. The property, a 0.2-acre lot in Milford Township, sits along Route 35 South beside the former school grounds, which the district no longer uses.
According to a developer’s plan provided to the district, the municipal authority intends to construct a booster pump station on the site. The planned station would support the authority’s water infrastructure in the area, though no construction timeline was included in the materials shared with the district.
The sales agreement lists Paul R. Shellenberger, chair of the Mifflintown Municipal Authority, as the authorized signatory for the authority. The document also requires the signature of Jackson Albert, president of the Juniata County School District Board of Directors, to finalize the transfer on behalf of the district. Albert’s signature would complete the transaction and allow the authority to move forward with its project.
The district has been evaluating portions of the former Mountain View property for potential sale or repurposing since the school closed. The transfer of this small lot marks another step in shifting unused district land to other public uses. No additional parcels were discussed at the Feb. 19 meeting, and the board did not indicate whether further sales are under consideration.
The authority has not publicly released additional details about the booster pump station project, but the land purchase clears the way for preliminary site work to begin once the agreement is fully executed.
