LEWISTOWN — The Central Pennsylvania World Hunger Association will hold its annual meat canning project Feb. 9-12 at the Chief Logan Fire Company in Lewistown, formerly the East Derry Fire Company.
The association will cut and grind about 40,000 pounds of chicken at a cost of approximately $1.40 per pound. All funds for the project come from local donations, and the total cost is expected to be about $90,000.
According to a news release, the meat will be shipped worldwide through the Mennonite Central Committee to help feed people in need in countries including Ethiopia, Ukraine, Haiti and Chad.
Up to 10% of the meat will remain in the area to support food pantries in central Pennsylvania.
The association uses the Mennonite Central Committee’s canner for the project.
The association is seeking individuals and groups to help can meat and label cans for shipment. Those interested may contact Jesse Diem at (717) 348-9577, Sylvanus Peachey at (717) 935-2511 or Jonathan Coldren at (717) 250-6840 to schedule a shift. Walk-ins are welcome.
