TYRONE — The official name of the competition might have been the “Music in the Valley” Tournament of Bands Competition in Tyrone, but it could easily have been the Marching Huskies Showcase.
Competing against other Class 3-A schools on Saturday, the Mifflin County High School Marching Band captured first place with a score of 77.67.
“We continue to grow and improve our score,” said Mifflin County High School Director of Bands Brandon Kahley. “The MCHS band after last weekend has found its rhythm, and I see only growth here on out with our score and students bound for improvement.”
The Marching Huskies have won both competitions to date they have entered, scoring a 73.850 at Conemaugh Township in Johnstown on Sept. 20.
Mifflin County was also recognized for its High Percussion on Saturday.

Eight bands competed in various levels at the Tyrone competition. Besides Mifflin County, the other bands included Conemaugh Township High School, DuBois Area High School, Elk County Catholic High School, Juniata Valley High School, St. Marys Area High School, Tyrone High School and Westmont Hilltop High School.
Since Mifflin County is a 3-A level band, it was in direct competition with DuBois. There are currently 14 3-A schools competing in TOB so far this year in Pennsylvania and surrounding states.
The theme of the band’s show this year is “Medusa.” In Greek mythology, Medusa, played by actor Lia Barahona, is a mythical creature that with one look can turn anyone to stone. Perseus, who is Anna Miller, is tasked with the challenging endeavor of capturing Medusa.
The show details this journey: Will the hero prevail or become yet another one of Medusa’s trophies? The musical soloists are Reese Bennett on Trumpet and Alia Diehl on the “mysterious” clarinet. The guard soloists are Emily Banks, Natalie Haubrick and Gabbi Swanger.
The drum majors leading the band this year are Diehl and Hannah Jones.
