LEWISTOWN — There’s a chill in the air, but don’t be too scared. Halloween season is the ideal time to show off that killer costume and take in some live music by the Lewistown-based band Brave Undead.
Lead singer and acoustic guitarist Kevin Ronk said the band name isn’t associated with the spooky holiday, although it certainly draw a few more ghouls and goblins to shows.
“It came from the video game ‘Dark Souls,'” Kevin explained. “There was a saying in the game that reminded me of the Grateful Dead from the 1970s when they had the country vibe thing going on. It reminded me a lot of the way we play, with much less instrumentation.”
Brave Undead is a roots rock trio consisting of Kevin; his son, Warren Ronk, on lead guitar; and Abraham Jones on drums including the Cajon for acoustic sets.
“We cover a variety of artists across multiple genres all adapted to our own style,” Kevin said.
On Friday, Oct. 24, Brave Undead will perform at the Downtown OIP and Grille in Lewistown, from 6 to 8 p.m. Ronk said the upcoming performance will be the band’s fourth show at the OIP.
While Brave Undead have come together over the past two years, Kevin and Jones have been making music for the past three decades. They were in a band called Mr. Jones and Me.
“It was a two-piece thing,” Kevin recalled. “I’ve been playing since I was 13, so like 30 years ago. My brother and I would go to Juniata County to a bunch of pickin’ parlors where we learned how to play guitar — the bluesy, country stuff.”
His brother, Dustin, still plays guitar and has performed with local musicians Chris Ruble and Chris Woodward and Shindiggin. Kevin and Chris were in a band called No Bull in 2005.
Although Kevin and Jones went to school together, they didn’t run in the same circles at Lewistown Area High School.
They got to know each other while working at Kmart. Once they discovered their mutual interest in music, they formed Rag Hollow around 2008.
“It was a little shaky at first, but we’ve been working on it a long time now,” Kevin said.
He added it’s a bonus to be able to spend time with his son, Warren, who is still learning how to play guitar, and share a common bond with music. The band debuted at the Embassy Fair a few years ago and have been rocking ever since.
“We played more electric there,” Kevin Ronk said.
Brave Undead’s songbook consists of a lot of classic rock covers with the links of Creedence Clearwater Revival and Tom Petty. Ideally, Kevin said the band would like to take the stage for about one to two gigs per month.
“It’s definitely more of a hobby,” Kevin said. “We are work(ing) full-time, and Warren is in school. All of our schedules are different.”
Kevin is employed by Ocean State Job Lot in State College, while Jones works at Hartley’s in Lewistown and Warren attends MCHS.
“That’s one of my main reasons for going out to play,” Kevin said of hanging out with his son.
