Smith declared Gatorade Athlete of the Year in track

The accolades keep rolling in for Mifflin County’s Carter Smith. The Husky was named the Pa. Gatorade Athlete of the Year in track and field on Thursday.
The junior placed first in the 1600- and 800-meter runs during the PIAA Track and Field Championships in Shippensburg last month. Smith ran a time of 4:01.54 in the 1600 and a time of 1:50.56 in the 800.
Last weekend, Smith won the mile run in 4:01.20 during the New Balance Nationals. This makes him the third Pa. runner to win the event in the past four years.
During the district championships in Altoona, Smith sped to a time of 4:08.08 in the 1600, good for first place. It also shattered the meet record of 4:14.41.
The Huskies runner also posted a mark of 1:50.61 during the 800 on Day 2 of districts, which was a first-place finish. It was also the 17th fastest time in the United States.
Smith also was named Pa. Track and Field Coaches Association Cross Country Boys Athlete of the Year in 2024.
