Rising river level could lead to minor flooding

LEWISTOWN — Minor flooding is possible as the Juniata River levels continue to rise through the week, according to Mifflin County’s office of public safety.

“Areas upstream of Mifflin County on the Juniata River are expected to receive more rain in shorter periods,” shared Phil Lucas from the Mifflin County Office of Public Safety.

Lucas said flooding is most likely in areas adjacent to the river.

The National Weather Service in State College issued a flood watch for the Juniata River Valley region Tuesday.

With the predicted rain, there could be excessive runoff which may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding could also occur in poor drainage and urban areas.

“Showers and thunderstorms with heavy rain rates exceeding one inch per hour are likely this afternoon and evening within an extremely moist environment for mid June,” said Lucas.

The National Weather Service told The Sentinel Tuesday, it “can’t rule out flash flood warnings” if there are bigger storms, it expressed less concern for a continued flood watch through the end of the week, however rainfall amounts of 2 to 3 inches are possible to accumulate through Wednesday and Thursday.

The Office of Public Safety advises the community to monitor forecasts and be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.

Starting at $2.99/week.
